Mitchell Wickham

Mitchell Wickham in Year 10 has just returned from competing at the IBJJF World Jiu Jitsu Championship in Long beach LA. Recognised as the biggest Brazilian jiu-jitsu competition in the world, Mitchell competed on the third day of competition in the Juvenile 1 Light-feather weight blue belt division. In order to take part Mitchell needed to make weight under 53kg, which meant the last few days before the comp were spent cutting weight.

In his division Mitchell was competing against competitors from some of the best clubs in the world, who are known for bringing students from Brazil  to America to train full time, with a little bit of home schooling.

Mitchell made the semi-final in his division, fighting a very talented fighter in a 6 minute round. Pulling off many sweeps put him ahead of  points for the majority of the match. With one minute left in the round Mitchell got caught in an arm lock. Trying his best to hold on the referee ended the match to prevent Mitchell from suffering injury.

Mitchell came away with bronze in his division meaning he qualified for the open weight juvenile 1 division. This was a great opportunity for Mitchell to compete against people twice his size at a world class level. The open weight division started at 7pm that night and was one of the last divisions of the day. Mitchell made the semi-final in the open weight competition fighting a guy that was twice the size of him. Mitchell tried his best against him but the weight and size difference was too much to handle. In the middle of the match Mitchell was again placed in a arm lock, with the strength difference forcing Mitchell to tap out. Mitchell fought well and again placed third with his opponent then ending up winning the open weight division.

Mitchell was one of 60 Australian competitors in the IBJJF World Jiu Jitsu Championship and one of the 10 Australian competitors to come away with a medal or placing. This was a great achievement for Mitchell and he wishes to thank his sponsors and all his family and friends for all their help and support. If it wasn’t for them he would not of been able to experience this amazing event.
