From the Head of Sport

While the weather was not too favourable last weekend we did manage to get all our games played and it was a great start to the winter season. Just a reminder that if you are not able to attend training or a game it is very important that you let both your MIC and coach know. It is very difficult when we are sending teams away and a number of students do not turn up. We do not want to risk having a forfeit on game day as this will bring greater penalty to our points for the season.

Congratulations - Rugby

This season BMGS rugby is playing in barbarian teams combined with Redlands. Last week the boys went to training at Redlands and had the opportunity to get to know the rest of their teammates. Thanks to Redlands for putting on afternoon tea for the boys prior to them returning home.

There is still some space in some teams if there are any students who do not as yet have a winter sport to play.

Tennis Presentation Lunch

This week we had our inaugural Tennis Presentation lunch. Many thanks to Nicole Arendt for coaching the team this season. All the players gained a lot from your coaching. Thank you also goes to Mrs Van Gelderen who gave up her time to coordinate the two teams. It was indeed a great season for all the players. I look forward to seeing you all back next season.  Mrs Van Gelderen's report of the Presentation appears below.

Tennis Presentation 1st May, 2023

During lunch on Monday, 1st May, we held our inaugural tennis presentation at Kedumba Gallery. This was a wonderful venue as it has a special place within our school, and our archivist, Mrs Marlene Plummer brought along one of the old wooden racquets that our BMGS students would have used last century.

Our exceptional coach, Nicole Arrendt was also able to be present and we were all happy to see her once again and to be able to show our gratitude for what she had taught us throughout the season.

The following awards were presented:

Jesse Hardaker and David Babajanyan received certificates from the ISA for being runners-up in the doubles finals last term.

The award for the most improved player was presented to Alex Stewart (Year 9) who had made a lot of progress over this season, ending the season with four out of five wins in the singles and a few more wins in the doubles.

The award for the most valuable player for having the most wins over the season in both his singles and doubles was presented to David Babajanyan (Year 9). In fact, in his singles matches, he only lost once over the ten rounds. As I said on the day, for this award, it is not enough to be a good player, you must also set an example, which David did.

The recipient of the Coach’s Award was Jed Ackman (Year 9) for being reliable, enthusiastic and being always willing to learn, take on new ideas, improve and help others.

Thank you Jesse for the wonderful words of praise that you gave to our super coach.

Thank you also to Mr Coote, Mr Laffin, Mrs Michielsen, Mrs Harris for being a part of our celebration. Thank you also to Mrs Herron for being our photographer on the day.

Match Reports 29th April - Boys' Football

BMGS U13s defeated Oxley College, 5-2

The game was played in a torrential downpour, on a soggy and cold field. The team played a man down, 9 v 10. They countered the deficit by maintaining formation, positioning, and good communication. They dominated the first half, and were unlucky to miss several shots at target. It was a magnificent display of gallant fighting spirit in really dire conditions. They found the net five times, and conceded two goals. The second goal by the opposition was scored from a penalty, which was awarded for what looked like a dive after a fair tackle by Javier Diaz. Such is soccer! Captain, Oliver Easton, was ferocious in the attack, making many runs, shots at goal and finding the back of the net. Thomas Hanemann was deadly on the wing. Angus Rogers was a stalwart in defence, intercepting many balls and putting them out of our goal area. In the second half the cold and fatigue started to set in, and bodies were flagging. Overall, the boys played their hearts out to a well-deserved win. Goal scorers were Thomas Hanemann (3), Oliver Easton (1) and Eligh Spees (1).

BMGS U14s defeated St Stanislaus College, 2-0

The Under 14s had their first game of the season against St Stanislaus in Bathurst.  The team played extremely well in the pouring rain against a challenging opposition. Amazing passing from the team continued to unlock opportunities throughout the game, with BMGS enjoying the majority of possession. A Messi-like backheel from Toby Hammon and a superb individual goal from Xavier Stephens helped the team to a deserved 2-0 win to get their season off to a great start.

BMGS U15s defeated St Stanislaus College, 2-1

BMGS U15s faced off against St Stanislaus College in a closely fought match on a very wet field in Bathurst. The first goal of the match came in the 10th minute, when a St Stanislaus defender unfortunately put the ball into his own net, giving BMGS the lead. However, St Stanislaus fought back and managed to equalise, leaving the scoreline at 1-1.

As the game wore on, it looked like it would end in a draw, but BMGS were awarded a penalty in the final five minutes, which Charlie Monks coolly converted to give us the lead. Prior to this, BMGS had been awarded several free kicks, but were unable to make them count. They did manage to score from one of these after Dylan Robilliard followed up on a rebound from the goalkeeper, but unfortunately it was discounted as the kick was taken before the referee had blown the whistle. Despite this setback, BMGS held on to their lead and secured an important victory.  Special mention is made of U14s players who stepped up to fill the ranks this weekend: Quidam Bienvenu, Toby Hammon, Sam Taylor, Luke Gibson, and a guest appearance from Xavier Stephens.  Goal scorers: Charlie Monks (1); Own Goal (1).

BMGS Second XI defeated Oxley College, 12-3

The Second XI put on a dominant display in their away game against Oxley College. Being short a few players, the BMGS side borrowed a few students from Oxley, but it proved unnecessary. The first half saw our Seconds tear through Oxley’s defence with ease, scoring an incredible nine goals before half-time. The second half saw Oxley try to mount a comeback, but both teams scored three goals, leaving BMGS the winners.  Goal scorers: Jem Sullivan (1); Charlie Mannes (3); Jules Beal (4); Tom O’Connor (4).  The students all agreed that Jules was the man of the match, an incredible international debut for the school. Well deserved!  An incredible start to the season for these players.

First XI BMGS v Redfield College

It was a bitter cold morning at Redfield, with constant rain, but the squad was ready and eager to get the job done coming off the back of last year's successful season. Redfield kicked off the match and, within seven seconds, Connor Secker intercepted Redfield’s play out from the back and scored a brilliant goal.  After a couple of excellent plays in the midfield between Jett, Isaac and Jaiden, Max Anicic was through on goal. With a clean finish, this made the score 2-0 to BMGS.   After Redfield failed to get a chance on goal, thanks to the strong defence between Richard Cunningham, Xavier Busch, Trin Camilleri and Will Zakis, Flynn Nicholls slotted home his first goal since joining the squad making the score now 3-0 to BMGS in under 15 minutes! Max and Connor then scored another goal apiece.

Moments before the first half finished, Jaxon Fraser, Jett Fendall, Oliver Drew and Isaac Nicholls played some brilliant link-up play, gaining momentum on goal. With a beautiful cross into the box, Flynn got up to score an incredible header against the tallest player on the field. This brought a roar of cheers from our supporting crowd and put BMGS up a whopping 6 goals to 0 to finish the first half.

It was an intense second half with both teams putting on a show. A couple of errors saw Redfield get some shots away, testing the safe hands of Jack Roberson who kept his cool and covered them with ease. An unfortunate mix-up in our defence saw the referee award Redfield a spot kick. Redfield were lucky to score off this kick, as Jack almost made the save.

Redfield continued to push for more goals. With some luck and a couple of slip ups, BMGS were caught out, conceding two goals and making the score 6-3 to BMGS in the last ten minutes of the match. With less than five minutes left, BMGS was also awarded a penalty after a harsh challenge from Redfield in the box. As promised by Coach Cameron, Jack, our very own goal keeper, would be the man to take it. Jack stepped up and smashed it home into the bottom corner to give BMGS their 7th goal in this thrilling match. Thank you to Mr Steve Coote for coming to watch this game, as well as friends and families who came to support our First XI this weekend.  Goal Scorers: Max Anicic (2); Connor Secker (2); Flynn Nicholls (2); Jack Roberson (1).  Man Of The Match - Will Groenewegen
