The girls' rugby 7s teams have completed an outstanding four weeks of tournament play by winning two championships. With the finals being played at school and the supporters in full voice at war cry practice on Friday at lunch, our girls were excited for what lay ahead. A large crowd gathered to fill the hill, and the tunnels and bagpipes for our girls created an atmosphere that will long be remembered.

Our 14s played some entertaining rugby across the tournament and the grand final was no exception. At the end of regular time the scores against Forbes' Redbend were tied which led to a golden point thriller. After a huge defensive effort the Kinross Wolaroi girls managed to steal the ball and after constantly battering the Redbend line, were able to crash over for the match winning try.  A great effort from these girls!

Our U16s entered the grand final as under dogs but showed an enormous amount of character and aggression to beat Orange Anglican Grammar. From the kick off our girls were up for the battle. They ran hard and tackled even harder. A combination of skill, aggression and pure desire ensured our 16s were victorious claiming the championship for 2023.

Our Opens girls had a consistent four weeks but their desire and commitment saw them through to the grand final against a very determined Scots All Saints team. Our girls started on fire and were leading, but an injury to a Scots girls saw play halted for five minutes and the momentum changed. Ultimately the Scots All Saints team had too much experience and took the lead, then held on to claim the win.

The 2023 tournament was hugely successful for our girls. Last year not a single Kinross Wolaroi team qualified for a grand final and this year we competed in all three, winning two. Huge things lie ahead for the future of our girls' rugby. Stay tuned!

Best Wishes,
Matt Tink MIC Rugby

Kinross Wolaroi took a 30-student strong squad to Champion Lakes in Western Australia last week for the Australia Rowing National Championships.

The week-long regatta gave the students plenty to think about earlier in the week with wind speeds reaching 60kph and more rain fall over one night than Perth had had all year. Racing was cancelled for the remainder of the day and the program was condensed as the regatta officials tried to get racing completed over the weekend.

Lucy Searle kicked things off with a solid bronze medal in the Women’s Under 19 Single, solidifying her position as one of the best scullers in the country.

Starting things off on Saturday's finals with a win was the Men’s Under 17 Coxed Quad. The crew, stroked by Oliver Smith, led from start to finish in a dominating performance, beating a national composite crew with the best scullers from three clubs who finished second, and St Joseph's (Sydney) who finished in third. It is the first time in 13 years the school has won this event.

On Sunday, the school had five crews race across six ‘A' Finals.

Lucy Searle won the School Girl Single, beating out rivals from Victoria and Adelaide and securing the mantle of the best school sculler in the country in 2023 – an amazing result.

One hour later she backed up in the School Girl Quad where she helped lead the crew of Ayla Ryan, Milly Lane, Ruby Leigo and Jayde Caro to a bronze medal in the School Girl Quad.

The Women’s Under 17 Eight gave us a replay of the NSW State Final with our crew facing off against long time rivals, Queenwood. The girls started hard and led the way through the early parts of the race, Queenwood proved too strong through the middle and took the gold with our girls finishing in a very strong second place.

We managed to get two boys' quad crews in the final of the School Boy Quad. The boys, mostly Year 12, showed fight and determination against great crews from around the country, falling short of the podium but taking out 4th and 5th. This squad displayed great depth to get two crews into the final. The first quad missed out on a medal by .16 of a second – one of the tightest photo finishes of the whole regatta.

In summary, Kinross Wolaroi School got all athletes into 'A' Finals over the week. Nineteen of our thirty athletes returned with a medal. All things considered, with the weather and reduced racing schedule, this was an amazing result for the school, which placed us in the top five schools in the country.

Calling all skiers and snowboarders

Kinross Wolaroi will be entering a snow sports team into the 2023 Interschools Snowsport Competition. This event is for all ages and skill levels and is meant to be fun, but there are also opportunities for more serious snow sporting kids to compete at higher levels.

Every year, schools from around Australia enter skiers and boarders into a number of events at the Interschools Competition. These are held in different locations each year within the Snowy Mountains of New South Wales and Victoria. Each area of the country falls into regions and then each region is given a time frame and location that their Interschools competition will occur.  Orange is in the Northern NSW and Queensland Region and this year we are competing in Perisher on 4-7 July.

If any children/families wish to participate this year and join in with a great group of fun, snow loving families, then please contact either the school representative, Maddison Jones on mjones@kws.nsw.edu.au or one of the parent representatives, Alison Bennett on 0416251774 or alisonbennett_is@hotmail.com. Please respond by the end of Week 1 Term 2 to ensure all information is passed on and the application process can start.

If you are interested, accommodation, ski passes and equipment are your family's responsibility, so this should be done early to avoid disappointment. The extra costs incurred for Interschools competitions are the Snow ID, the event registration and race entry fees.
