Around the Senior School

Year 12 Study Camp

Our Y12 Study Camp has kicked off with energetic and impassioned debate over ethical conundrums that face our students. Run by Ms Skinner, students are working through a number of scenarios which require deep consideration of moral understandings and sound principles. Our Camp will provide challenging and thoughtful growth opportunities for students as well as academic and pastoral support.

Year 11 Geography

KOSCIUSZKO NATIONAL PARK

The Year 11 Geographers travelled to Kosciuszko National Park (KNP) to undertake their primary and secondary data collection for the Senior Geography Project.

Students had an Alpine Ecosystems presentation by alpine specialist Mr Dan Nicholls at The Kosciuszko Education Centre at Sawpit Creek. They investigated first hand the changes to the environment as you move up the mountain. These “environmental gradients” break the area into three major environments of the montane, sub-alpine and alpine zones.

Students also had the opportunity to mountain bike the Thredbo Valley Track and admire the snow gums and mountain ash trees. Whilst on the fieldwork students are exposed to the ecosystem functioning of the alpine environment and then they choose an area of investigation in the KNP, topics discussed included:

  • the impacts of climate change on the Mountain Pygmy Possum
  • the environmental impacts of Brumbies in the fragile alpine environment
  • the impact of bushfires on the Southern Corroboree frog
  • and identifying the correlation between snow depth and revenue for Thredbo Pty Ltd as a business.

Our students thrived in the outdoor learning environment and were fantastic ambassadors for the school. A big thanks to Mrs Alex McManus and Mr Will Waterson.

Year 10 Macbeth Excursion

On Wednesday 22 March all Year 10 students travelled to Sydney to watch the Bell Shakespeare Company's production of 'Macbeth' at the Sydney Opera House. This was a fantastic opportunity provided by Bell Shakespeare to see their production, which will be touring nationally this year, available for selected school performances.

It was a wonderful day and students were treated to an exceptional performance by talented actors. Year 10 will be studying the play closely in their English classes during Term 2 and having the opportunity to view a production of the play at one of the most prestigious theatres in Australia will be a huge help to their understanding and appreciation of this seminal text.

Year 10 were wonderful ambassadors for the school and we received incredibly positive feedback from Bell Shakespeare regarding their behaviour and attention as members of the audience. A very big thank you to Mr Jones, Mr Watkins, Mrs Keir, Mr Smedley, Mrs Holland, Mrs Proudford-Nalder, Mrs Rohr and our gap staff Joy McClusky, Finlay Morris and Ethan Phillipson who accompanied Year 10.

Year 8 Textiles

Old fashioned fun using today’s technology.

Year 8 Textiles Technology have been using Adobe Photoshop to create colourful kite designs. The kites were laser cut and sublimation printed at school. Students constructed their own kites and took advantage of the beautiful Autumn day to give them their first flight.

With thanks to Allan McDougall for the kite pattern and lending his expertise.

Kinross Wolaroi wins HICES Debating Round 1

The Kinross Wolaroi debating season has kicked off with a great amount of enthusiasm amongst our debating teams. This year we have eight teams registered from Years 7 to 11, meeting twice weekly. The first round began last week with the teams debating topics about the education system. The Middle division argued that schools should teach programming, while the Senior division debated the merits of NAPLAN. In the Opens they were adamant that university fees should be free. Overall we recorded wins across all divisions. A great start to what looks to be a promising year of debating ahead.

Inspiration from Nedd Brockmann

Our Year 12 students were very lucky to attend the Lunch & Learn with Nedd Brockmann on Monday at the Orange Ex-Services Club.

A former Kinross Wolaroi School student, Mr Brockmann (Class of 2016) spoke about his record-breaking epic journey across Australia, from the amazing support he received to all the trials and tribulations that featured in his 46.5-day run.
