Senior School News/Events

Dear Senior School Parents/Carers and Students

Happy Easter From The Senior School Team

The Senior School Team would like to congratulate all students for their efforts during Term 1. We wish all students and their families a lovely Easter break. We look forward to welcoming you back from a healthy, safe and productive break on Wednesday 26 April.

Year 11 Leadership Captains

Congratulations to all the incredible applicants for the Year 11 Captain positions. It was difficult to select only four students for these roles, we are excited to see what these students are able to contribute to Frankston High School this year.

Please join us in celebrating our Captains Lena Ahmed and Ava Limpens and Deputy Captains Georgia Matthews and Amy Staunton.

Study Centre And Study Periods

It has been pleasing to see students make use of the collaborative study Presentation Space and the Silent Study Centre on the Senior Campus. Students are required to stay at school for their study periods. Student classes commence at 8.10am (Period 0). If students do not have a Period 0 class then they are expected to be at school from 9.00am. Students are permitted to leave at the end of their last class for the day. If students are coming later or leaving early they need to sign in and out via the Compass Kiosk in the Senior Campus Office.

Students can access these spaces before Period 0 and up until 5.30pm. If a student is wishing to stay after 5.30pm, they are required to organise this with the Senior School Team.

Students Driving To School

Students who drive to school are reminded that they must complete a consent form (which is available from the Senior School Office) and attach a photocopy of their Driver’s Licence.

Students are not permitted to park in the school grounds and hence, must ensure that they follow local parking restrictions on nearby roads.

Students should also be aware that they must not park too close to the pedestrian crossings or driveways.

Year 11 Midyear Exams

Wednesday 31 May - Thursday 8 June

It is best practice for students to start preparing for examinations early in Term 2 by revising Unit 1 Area of Study 1 content alongside new learning for Unit 1 Area of Study 2 or 3.

Unit 2 will commence Tuesday 13 June

Year 12 Assessment Week

Friday 2 June - Thursday 8 June

During this week students will sit a combination of School Assessed Courseworks (SACs), School Assessed Tasks (SATs) or Examinations.  Student timetable will be published early Term 2.

Unit 4 will commence Tuesday 13 June

Assessments Results On Compass

Students, Parents and Carers can monitor their academic growth via Compass – Learning Tasks. Teachers will report results after assessments have been marked and moderated. At Year 12 level, students are to be reminded that scores may change due to the statistical moderation process that is based on the student's performance in the GAT and the external VCAA examination.

VCE And VCE VM Attendance

The minimum attendance requirement is 90% to be eligible for a Satisfactory (‘S’) result for an Outcome in VCE and VCE-VM. Students, Parents and Carers can check attendance via Compass. Teachers use the VCE % column (on Compass) to check if a student meets the attendance requirement.

It is important to note, if a parent/carer ‘explains’ an absence via Compass, this does not automatically make it VCE complaint. See below.

Absences from school can fall into two categories:

  • School authorised (VCE compliant)
  • Unauthorised (non-compliant)
School Authorised (VCE Compliant) Unauthorised (Non-Compliant)
  • Absence supported by medical documentation (medical certificate)
  • One attempt at driver license (if it cannot be scheduled outside of class time) – receipt of test to be given to Attendance Manager
  • TAFE studies and Structured Workplace Learning
  • School approved incursions and excursions including Interschool Sport
  • Funeral – Parent/Carer note at Coordinators’ discretion
  • Year 12 Examination
  • State/National representation in sport - letter from coach required if outside of school.
  • Unexplained absence from school
  • Absence from school with parent/carer call only, no medical certificate (parent / carer note does not constitute an authorised absence)
  • Missing bus or sleeping in
  • Disagreement with family / friend / partner
  • Lateness
  • Casual / part-time work
  • Family holiday (with NO approved Absence Learning Plan)
  • Driving lesson
  • Personal issues (without Coordinator approved for Special Consideration)
  • Family commitments
  • Preparation for SAC or SAT or due to finishing work in other subjects
  • Centrelink appointments
  • Supporting an upset friend or timetable mix-ups (without Coordinator approval)

Missed Assessment - Authorised

If an Assessment Task (SAC/SAT) is missed due to an authorised absence:

  • A student may sit the SAC/SAT for score

Missed Assessment - Unauthorised

If an Assessment Task (SAC/SAT) is missed due to an unauthorised absence:

  • A student may sit the SAC/SAT for a satisfactory result (S) only, not a numeric score. This could have a detrimental impact on a student’s Study Score / ATAR.

All documentation supporting an authorised absence should be handed to the Attendance Officer of the Senior School the next day following the absence.

Statutory Declarations:

If a statutory declaration is used as authorised documentation, it must be submitted and approved within one week of the student’s return to school. Statutory declarations and medical certificates must have specific dates. A statutory declaration will not be accepted if it only includes an open-ended date range.

What to do if a student’s attendance is below 90%?

A students can apply for Redemption which runs Thursday afternoons 3.30pm – 4.30pm on the Senior Campus in Rooms 303 and 304. Students should see their Year Level Coordinators, Mrs Mciver in the Senior School Office or their classroom teachers to assign them to redemption.

One hour of Attendance Redemption redeems 2% attendance. All Unit 1 and 3 attendance must be redeemed by the end of Week 8 in Term 2 – 16 June.

If a student’s attendance is below 70% for unauthorised absences, students may not be automatically given the opportunity to redeem attendance. This will need to be positively case managed by the Senior School Team.

If a student misses more than 30% of classes due to authorised absences, they need to apply for Special Consideration with the Senior School Team.

VCE NEWS/EVENTS

VCE-VM | Grand Prix Excursion Reflection

On Friday 31 March our VCE- VM class went to Albert Park to watch the Grand Prix. We took the train in, met at Frankston Station at 8.00am ready for an exciting day. Upon arrival we met the Western Bulldogs team, which was a highlight for some. The commodores, roulettes, spit fires, the acrobatic planes, the mystery machine (from Scooby Doo) and the BMX show were among the highlights. We almost got the prize for the loudest cheering but missed out by a fingernail. Overall, a splendid day thank you to our wonderful teachers Ms Sasha Fischer, Mr Wais Habib and Mr Heath Booth for organising this memorable day for us.

VCE-VM | ‘Push for Better’ Push up Challenge

Our incredible Year 11 VCE- VM students are thrilled to share that this June they will be participating in the ‘ Push for Better’ Push up Challenge. We have decided to support lifeline with the funds we make through this wonderful opportunity to get fit, have fun and increase our awareness around mental health.

The aim/ mission of ‘Push for better’ is to help shine a light on what we can do as a community/ school/ country to decrease the number of suicides in Australia. Each day the students will learn about mental health as the push target relates to a vital mental health statistic in Australia. For example, 135 push ups because one recent analysis of scientific evidence suggests that three 45 minute exercise sessions per week (135 minutes total) is enough to provide anti- depressant benefits to mental health.

If you are able, they would love your support to get their fund raising kicked started 😊
