Explore the Learning in Grade 3

Reading

In Reading we are exploring the ways in which we make connections with the texts we read to help us make sense of them. When students draw on experiences and prior knowledge it helps their understanding and encourages a greater engagement in the text they are reading. We have been looking at three types of connections, text to self, text to text and text to world connections.

Writing

This week we have been exploring Procedural Texts in which students clearly write a set of instructions on how to do a task. We have used Writers Notebooks to generate and record ideas for topics, and written a procedure on a subject we are confident and knowledgeable about. We will spend a few weeks refining the structure and techniques for this text type and move into Explanation Texts later in the term.

Maths:

Students will begin Term 3 by exploring strategies such as near doubles, bridging to 10 and the split strategy to assist them to solve problems and equations. They will then move onto learning subtraction strategies such as the jump strategy to solve subtraction questions. In the second half of the term, students will investigate chance and data, looking at the probability of every day events occurring and graphing this data. They will conclude the term by looking at location and measurement in the measurement and geometry strand of maths. Throughout these units students will also utilise a range of problem solving skills to assist them in tackling worded problems.

Inquiry:

This term our Inquiry focus will be on Design and Technology. Students will share their initial understandings of what design and technology is, where they may have encountered or needed these skills before, as well as sharing jobs they believe require the use of design and technology skills. In the 'finding out' phase of inquiry students will be looking at forces and how things move, before applying these new skills to designing and creating a wind powered vehicle.
