Explore the Learning in Grade 2

Term 2 

 

Reading 

Throughout this term, the Grade 2 students will be learning and exploring a range of comprehension and fluency strategies. They will be experimenting with matching their tone to the punctuation, reading aloud in phrases, and retelling the story using a script. They will continue to read voraciously during independent reading and recognise and record the connectives used by authors. In the second half of the term, the Grade 2 students will be turning their attention to Non-Fiction texts, exploring gathering up facts, identifying the main idea and supporting details ,and using these skills to link in with their writing of informative texts.  

 

Writing  

 In Writing for Term 2, the Grade 2 students will continue to use their Writer’s Notebooks to generate ideas and develop their ideas into entries. They will be learning about using connectives to improve sentence fluency, expanding their vocabulary and word choice, crafting their writer’s voice and exploring a variety of ways to begin their sentences. Later in the term, students will be using their writing skills to publish and present information.   

 

In SMART Spelling, students will continue to develop independent procedures for completing spelling practice both at home and at school. They will learn about a range of different spelling rules and sounds and explore using these in their writing.   

 

Maths 

The Grade 2 students will be working through a variety of different topics in Maths this term, including addition and subtraction, financial Maths and transformations of 2D shapes. The students will also explore the measurement of time, including the 4 seasons and months on the calendar. They will build fluency in their number skills through a wide range of warm up games and number talks and build confidence working with numbers into the thousands.  

 

Inquiry 

In Inquiry for this term, the Grade 2 students will be learning all about Australian History. They will be exploring the histories and perspectives of Indigenous Australians, identifying key events in the modern history of Australia, and examining key landmarks, animals and events from the past.
