Grade 4

Explore the Learning in Grade 4

We have a wonderful Term ahead in Year 4.

Writing:

The Year 4's are extremely lucky as they had a visiting author come last Friday for generating writing ideas. We will be writing narratives on Friday's with his guidance to create incredible characters, settings and stories. The theme they will all be based around is a journey or a quest.

This week the Year 4's have begun learning about writing Information Reports. They have begun by creating their own animal by combining the head of one to the body of another. Students will then use information text features to create their own reports. These will include maps, labelled diagrams, sub headings, pictures with captions, introductions and conclusions.

Reading:

This term in Reading we be focusing on identifying a range of literacy features including subheading, pictures, captions, diagrams and labels. This will involve the student comparing and contrasting a range of texts (fiction and non-fiction). We will examine the authors description of characters appearance, behaviour, speech and how these impacts on the characters development. We will continue to explore the importance of questioning and connections while reading.  As the term progresses, we will begin to investigate poetic language and devices including similies, neologisms, puns, metaphors, personification, aliteration and onamatepia.

Inquiry:

This Term in Inquiry the grade 4’s will be exploring the range of human and natural impacts on our local environment over time. We will be researching and learning about the Barwon Heads Bluff, the Barwon River, the Sand Dunes, and the Mangroves. Through this unit, students will develop further knowledge about how a range of actions and circumstances can have long lasting impacts on our natural environments.

Maths:

In maths this term we are starting by exploring the features and uses of maps, before creating our own theme parks maps to demonstrate our knowledge. We will also be learning a variety of strategies to solve multiplication and division problems, followed by a unit investigating different types of measurement, including length and area. To finish the term, we will examine the properties of 3D shapes.

Spelling:

This Term for spelling, the Year 4 students will be moving between the different Year 4 teachers for more targeted spelling words.

Camp:

From the 22nd - 24th of May the grade 4 students will be heading to Lyrebird Park for their school camp! This is a wonderful opportunity for the grade 4’s which we are all looking forward to.

A reminder to parents to return your forms by Monday and to email your students teacher if you would like to volunteer for camp.
