Science

Term 1

The prep students have settled into Science well and are enjoying learning about pets and their needs for survival. The students have demonstrated skills in predicting, observing and explaining their findings.

The grade 1/2’s have watched closely as their mealworms have developed and entered the second stage of their lifecycle: the pupa or cocoon. They are eagerly awaiting the next stage and predicting what might come out of the cocoon!

The grade 3/4’s ventured out to the eucalyptus canopy and the frog bog in search for living things. They studied a sample of water from the frog bog using magnifying glasses and microscopes to identify the types of organisms present. The students used their scientific inquiry skills to group various living things into animal groups such as insects, annelids and amphibians. Their favourite pond water organisms were the aquatic worm and the backswimmer.

The grade 5/6’s have examined microorganisms under the microscope and have been able to identify features by zooming up 40-100 times what the eye can see. The students are looking forward to making bread to demonstrate the role of yeast as a microorganisms and discovering how scientists used mould to invent antibiotics.
