Mathematics - Boot Camp

Five-week challenge for Year 6s

The Mathematics Boot Camp for current Year 6 students entering St Norbert College in 2020 was an enriching experience. The students were eager to attend the camp for five weeks on Thursday afternoons. They were challenged with times tables, problem solving questions and primary school mathematics content. We also ran the adult maths camp for parents and grandparents for three weeks at that time. I wish to thank Ms Wang, Mr Vu, Ms Lim, Ms Tersigni and Ms Teo for running these sessions after school.

My experience at the maths bootcamp was really fun because I got to meet new people and hang out with my friend Chloe because she was in my class. I also enjoyed learning about new maths problems and meeting my teacher.

In this exquisite mathematics boot camp we went through many different concepts of maths. The program was deeply explained and well thought out to give us a clue of the curriculum we will be receiving in Year 7.  Overall, I would love to come back and would honestly recommend this to others. The activities were fun to study. We were shown how to solve problems after finished in great detail.

I thoroughly enjoyed attending the boot camp and I’m  sure all my friends did too. Here at SNC, the teachers are very welcoming and the students seem quite friendly. The math boot camp questions are well balanced from the Year 6/7 school curriculum. It was a good chance to make new friends and I can’t wait to make more next year.

Five weeks at St Norbert College for the Year 6 Boot Camp 2019 Mathematics has helped me increase my mathematic knowledge. It was a wonderful privilege to attend this Boot Camp. Hopefully St Norbert Collage will keep up with the Boot Camp. Thank you for letting me complete Year 6 Mathematics Boot Camp 2019.

I had great time in the past five weeks at St Norbert College Year 6 Mathematics Boot Camp. The teacher was very nice and taught us with a great effort. I learnt a lot of new things which I’m very grateful for. The camp has prepared me for high school. Thank you, St Norbert's, for the amazing classes I completed.

I have learnt a lot of things such as multiply fractions, prime numbers and to be more confident when saying my times tables. I have enjoyed this boot camp a lot  because it taught me a lot of math strategies and gave me more confident coming into year 7. I would definitely encourage next year’s year 6’s to do the math camp. Thank you to Ms Lim for teaching me new things at boot camp.

I have learned many things from the wonderful Ms Lim like writing number sentences, improper, mixed and proper fractions and many other things. I definitely enjoyed coming to the boot camp 2019 and would definitely recommend it for next year’s Year 6s.

I have learnt a lot of new tricks, for example I learnt how to do the times tables 6-12 with my hands. It was fun and interesting at the same time. I also learnt how to do decimal multiplication. At first, I got confused on how to do it but at the end I got there. Thank you for all the teachers who stayed after school and helped us learn more about maths.

This experience has been an amazing opportunity because I learned maths equations that I didn’t know how to solve and also bonded with few of my friends from this and I have also made new friends. This past few weeks have flown by, and honestly, I kind of wish that they had extended the time period for math boot camp. I learnt what pronumeral “x“ means, how to simplify fractions, percentages, decimals, division and I even learned a new way of multiplying numbers with our fingers. I have loved this experience so far and I hope I see others here again next year.

We did lots of problem solving and fractions. I liked that the content was challenging but not too hard that it was frustrating. I think we should have worked on more times tables especially because I know I struggle  with them.

MAWA Conference 2019

This year St Norbert College presented two sessions at the conference held mid-November on “Magic Mental Maths” and “How to write a Mathematics investigation for Year 11 and Year 12”. I like to thank Mr Ó Grádaigh, Ms Teo and Ms Lim in assisting me to run these presentations.
