Great news from the English faculty

Year 10 MacKillop student Ashleigh Arcigal reflects on her experience of becoming a published poet.

I thank Ms Nailon for running the Writing Club last year; if not for this, I don't think I would have become a contributor to HOME - The City of Greater Dandenong Poetry Book.

Quite fittingly I had been writing many poems about Australia when Ms Nailon told me that the City of Greater Dandenong Council was holding a sort of open call for poems exploring the idea of ‘home.’ Presented with the chance to finally become a published author, I had to take it; so, I sent in ‘0106’ — a poem I wrote that describes the cycle of the seasons in Australia, Winter into Spring, and the warm relationships between people throughout freezing weather.

I was called over the phone some time later by the curator of the book; he told me that my poem was one of the few he wanted in this anthology. My brain was basically exploding at this point! Later, he invited me to the book launch.

On Wednesday 31 July, I recited my poem at the launch held at Dandenong Library. Feeling ecstatic, I made it to the venue in one piece. I, of course, had to take a peek at the sandwiches laid out in front of me as did my parents! Having just finished stuffing my face with fruit, I was called to recite first. I felt honoured to be able to share my words with every other talented and unique writer in the room.

HOME consists of a variety of poems from people aged fourteen to seventy exploring the idea of home. You can find it in Nazareth College’s Resource Centre soon!

Youth Ministry

On Monday 22 July Year 10 Youth Ministry students ran their first of four liturgies for our primary feeder schools. Twenty of our students went to St Simon the Apostle Primary School in Rowville and conducted games and activities to help lead their Grade 6 students into a deeper understanding of the Sacrament of Confirmation. Judging by the attentive listening and smiles from all involved both Nazarenes and St Simon's students enjoyed a very worthwhile day.

God bless.

SIS Book in a Day Workshop

On Thursday 25 July eight students, including myself, were not participants at House Athletics.  Instead, we attended the second annual SiS’ Book in a Day’ Workshopping day. ‘Book in a Day’ is a competitive event that sees eight students ranging from years 7 to 10 from each school that is a part of the SIS spending a long day writing and illustrating a novella.

Before the actual book writing day, we were kindly offered the chance to participate in a workshop day to learn new skills from illustrators, authors and journalists. This year we were fortunate enough to have the opportunity to attend 2 workshops instead of last year where only one workshop was offered. This was so helpful for us as we got the chance to learn different skills such as character creation, speed writing to prompts and speed drawing. This year our team of students includes Aaliyah, JoAnne, Sophie, Alessia, Monica, Saravina, Peter and myself. We look forward to our forthcoming day of writing and hope that inspiration flows on the day.

SIS Teen Chef Championship 2019

On Monday 5 August four Year 11 Food Studies students participated in the SIS Teen Chef Competition at St John’s Regional College in Dandenong. SIS Teen Chef is similar to a Masterchef competition for schools. Ten school entered this year and each team consisted of four students. Two students worked together to prepare a main course and two students prepared a dessert in 90 minutes. The theme for this year’s competition was ‘East meets West’.

The Nazareth team was represented by Declan Bray, Jessica Chandrasekera, Celina El Rayes and Tehilah Kunfunda. Celina and Tehilah prepared the main course which was Butter Chicken with Gnocchi and Naan bread. Declan and Jessica prepared White Chocolate and Raspberry Samosas with a home-made Chai Ice-cream.

The students practised and perfected their recipes at school and won a bronze medal at the Competition.

We are very proud of our students and they are to be congratulated on their excellent effort and achievement.
