Around The School

NAIDOC Celebration
On Tuesday 28 August we celebrated NAIDOC at our school with a number of events and guests joining us. This year’s theme: Because of her we can.
Our guest speaker Aunty Carol Green, Aboriginal Community Liaison Officer, School Services Directorate at the Armidale Office spoke about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women that have played – and continue to play - active and significant roles at the community, local, state and national levels. They are our mothers, our elders, our grandmothers, our aunties, our sisters and our daughters.
We had a special performance by Kathy Kelly who sang a song by Ruby Hunter – Welcome to all people. Her beautiful vocals were accompanied by our Aboriginal Education Officer Anthony Green on guitar.
After our BBQ lunch, the school was entertained by Dion Drummond. Dion shared tales and artifacts from his cultures, teaching students about the different traditions of both Torres Strait Island and Aboriginal storytelling. Students participated in learning a little of the language including some songs as well as a look at the skill of indigenous dances.
Book Week Parade
On Wednesday 23 August Uralla Central School students from Kindergarten to Year 6 participated in the School's book week parade. To celebrate book week, students were encouraged to come dressed as their favourite book character. Congratulations to all the students, parents, carers and teachers that helped to make the parade such a spectacular success!
