Champions League Girls Soccer

Our Champions League girls soccer had another impressive victory. On Wednesday 9 August they were 2 – 0 winners over Holy Cross. The girls have now made it to the quarter-final stage of the competition where they will play Woodvale Senior High School on Wednesday 23 August. To make it to the final 8 is a fantastic achievement, as most of the schools still involved have specialist soccer programs. Well done girls.

Senior Rubgy v Scotch College

- Captains Report by Chris Fairweather

On 1 August, the combined John XXIII/Newman College first XV embarked on a mission to regain the Scotch Cup for the first time since 2014. Going into the match heavily as the underdogs, the team certainly had a lot to prove against a classy Scotch outfit.

Josh Lynn, Rob Line and Matt Lloyd led strong from the forwards, making big moves and crucial tackles. Our forwards were very competitive at the rucks, scums and line-outs. The Backs were led by Lachy Leggett and Zac Barrett, an ultimate combination. Throughout the game our backs were hitting the line and making fast breaks. Callan Reynolds played a crucial role of scrum-half, bringing both the forwards and backs together; Callan was very competitive in giving the team fast and clean ball.

After a gruelling and physical encounter, the team prevailed, running away with the match 20-10.

None of this would have been possible without superb coaching from Critter Golding and Tim Casey. Critter gave us the skills, tactics and teamwork needed. Tim kept our fitness levels remarkably high and ensured we were ready for the physical challenge ahead.

I recommend anyone from Year 10 and above to seriously consider being a part of the JTC 1st XV, the coaching staff are incredible. If you're interested in advancing your current rugby skills I recommend coming down to 2018 pre-season.

NAS Athletics Meet

Tuesday 22 August, Year 7 to 10

Year 7 to 10 students will be involved in the NAS Athletics day on Tuesday 22 August. Whilst students will be competing against athletes from other NAS schools (Sacred Heart, Newman, Chisholm and Servite), there is no scoring on the day or champion boy/girl competition. The day is a chance for students to improve their result from the House Carnival day. Selections for the ACC team will be compiled following the event.

Fr Kevin King Cup 2017

Many fingers were crossed in the hope of a dry day for our 2017 Fr Kevin King Cup. Although temperatures were at a chilly low throughout the day, this did not deter the efforts and enthusiasm by all students involved.

Our fabulous carnival began with a vibrant, energetic entrance parade by our wonderful Year 12 cohort. Their outfits looked stunning and their performances were a great indication of what was in store for the rest of the day. Congratulations to all students for raising the bar and making it difficult to top in the future.

With record participation levels from students across all events, meant that the day was going to be a race to the finish. Each House was fighting tooth and nail to be awarded the Father Kevin King Cup. Koolyangarra were vying for their 10th consecutive win of the carnival, however, the other Houses could smell a change in the air.

The winning House was not consolidated until the very end of the Carnival. With anticipation of a new reigning House in the air, it was the year that we saw an end to the strangle hold that Koolyangarra had held.

Congratulations to St Louis for taking out the top prize and winning the Father Kevin King Cup.  In addition to the overall winner, Loreto took out the Spirit award for the day. Congratulations Loreto.  All Age Champions and Runner Up Age Champions will be announced during our Secondary Assembly in Week 6.

Overall a fantastic day was had by all and many thanks to our Staff, Parents and Students for their contribution on the day.

Sunsmart WA School Surfing Titles

Well done to all competitors listed below who competed in very challenging conditions at South Trigg on Wednesday 16 August.  For our first-time competitors, the day proved to be a great experience in terms of how difficult competitive heats can be with limited time, strong winds and messy swell.

Congratulations to our Junior Surfers Tom Edwards (Ward 9) and Gabe O’Loughlin (St Louis 9) who made it to the semi-finals on the day.

Our Senior Surfer’s Robert Line (St Louis 12) and Beau Bevan (Ward 11) once again won their division for the third straight year, securing a place in the state finals next Friday 25 August. A massive achievement!

We wish both Rob and Beau all the very best in the State Finals.

Rowing

The John XXIII College Rower is a different type of person, they endure multiple hours of training before most their peers wake up from their warm beds. They preserve through the longest racing season any rowing school participates in with 14 regattas entered in 2017 alone. They are dedicated to their crewmates and rowing family, who are in turn dedicated to them.

Last weekend saw the 2017 Rowing Season draw to a close. The 2017 season has seen 28 new rowers join the club, a Year 9A Eight take the course at IGSSA Head of the River for the first time since the early years of the rowing club, 44 entries in our final Championship regatta resulting in a second place overall with 178 points- 61 points more than 2016, our Open mixed eight taking out 1st place and every single division we entered we had at least one crew make the final. This all with multiple crews rowing up a year level and in some cases rowing up two year levels.

On Sunday 13 August, we were able to celebrate together as a family at our Presentation Luncheon, in the Roncali Hall. Our rowers were presented with their well-earned medals for their efforts over the course of the season. As 2017 saw a new era of John XXIII Rower, we introduced the new College rowing zoot suit to take the water in 2018.
