The contemporary social environment in which we live has invented a mould that all must conform to. A single figure resists however, symbolic of hope and the notion that we can break free of constraints and instead embrace each other’s worth and dignity.

Self Portrait – Bowerbird

Oil on canvas and found objects

My whole life I’ve been what most people call a hoarder; I prefer the term ‘bowerbird’. The artwork shows the bowerbird, a spiritual representation of myself, with each object in the bird’s nest symbolising memories of significant times in my life.

High Rise

Acrylic and soft pastel on canvas

My work explores the rise of capitalism in contemporary society. The Perth cityscape represents the achievement of private enterprise; however the transparent reaching hands convey the longing and need of the less fortunate, forgotten in the shadows of the prosperous.

Wedlocked

Oil and gold leaf on canvas

Imagine having no choice in who you marry. Not knowing where your life will lead, or if you will be able to lead it. Thousands of women everyday are forced into arranged marriage. This especially effects young women who are expected to suddenly fulfil the roles of a wife so young.

Urban Sprawl

Oil on canvas

This artwork conveys the impact of urban sprawl on birdlife. The diptych composition displays the Western Rosella, native to Western Australia, present in a tree amongst an endless spread of suburban buildings. Overall, this composition creates a confronting suggestion of the diminishing habitat of the Western Rosella.

My artwork references the vulnerability of polar bear populations; a victim of global consumerism and our poor stewardship of the earth. Depleting polar bear populations expose how human greed has destroyed the earth, through our treatment of nature as a commodity.

Australian History Competition Results

On 24 May, our Year 8 students participated in the Australian History Competition. The Competition is prepared by the History Teachers’ Association of Australia and run in conjunction with The Giant Classroom. The primary goal is to provide an interesting and challenging competition for students and support the implementation of the new Australian Curriculum: History. It provides a quality resource that demonstrates approaches to the assessment of knowledge, skills and understandings.

Each student is recognised for their participation on the day with a certificate which will be distributed in class. Congratulations to the following students who received a Credit (Mark between 74%-80%), Distinction (82%-88%) or High Distinction (90%+). Special mention to Declan Carroll, who achieved the top result in Western Australia. Declan will also receive a medallion recognising this achievement. The following students will be formally recognised at the next Year Group Assembly.

Australian Geography Competition

Year 10 students tested their geography skills and knowledge against students from all around Australia in the 2017 Australian Geography Competition. Over 70,000 students from 743 schools entered the competition so the results give us an external benchmark as to how our students are going in certain aspects of geography.

Each student is recognised for their participation on the day with a certificate which will be distributed in class. Congratulations to the following students who received a Credit (65%-70%), Distinction (73%-75%) or High Distinction (78%+).

Special mention to Sashi Tandon, who placed in the top 1% of students in Australia. To be eligible for this accolade students must score a least 88% in the competition. The following students will be formally recognised at the next Year group Assembly.
