Dear Parents
On Tuesday morning our Years 3-6 attended Mass with Fr Greg Donovan to celebrate the Feast of the Assumption. It was a lovely liturgy and we thank Fr Greg, Miss Dernie and Year 5B for all their efforts and preparation involved.
What is your favourite children’s book from your own childhood, or the one you enjoy reading to your own children the most?
Books and story-telling are such an important part of our daily life in the Primary school. A love of books and stories is critical for children’s language development, as well as developing an understanding of culture and history.
Every week the children visit the Library to choose new books – fiction or non-fiction. The children all delight in the ritual and routine of returning and choosing a new book. At lunch time each Monday and Wednesday the children also have the opportunity to join Mrs Cattapan in the Library for story time.
In preparation for Book Week, the children have also enjoyed looking at the books that have been shortlisted for the Children’s Book Council of Australia Book of the Year Awards with Mrs C and their classroom teachers. During their weekly visits to the library the children are introduced to various authors and illustrators, and discuss elements of the book – developing some of the concepts of critical literature. Did they like the book, why, why not, what about the illustrations? Have they read any other books by this author?
Despite many parents’ frustrations of reading the same book over and over to your child, it is an important aspect of language development. Through the repetition, children learn the rhythm of a language, they learn the colloquial use of language, and they develop an understanding that the words on the page say the same thing no matter who reads it. They begin to learn about different prints, expression, punctuation in some texts, rhyme, and patterns of text. There is a point where all children will ‘read’ a book from memory, because they know the story and text so well from so many important repetitions. Even when children are able to read themselves, it is still wonderful to have shared reading times. I encourage all parents to make a family visit to our school Library before or after school and enjoy a story together. Our library staff are also very happy to help you choose suitable literature for your children.
Book Week is almost here and we have an eventful week planned! The theme of this special week is ‘Escape To Everywhere’Josh Langley, author and illustrator will be running workshops for Years 2 -6 and talented storyteller, Rebecca Flanagan will be entertaining the Kindy to Year with picture books and music. Our goal is to enthuse our students to read, to ignite an excitement for books and to appreciate that through reading we can ‘escape to everywhere’.
Finally, just a reminder Monday 21 August is a Pupil Free Day for all students.

After months of early morning training sessions, the Cross-Country season concluded with the Interschool Carnival last Thursday on the College ovals. Our athletes performed very well amongst the twelve schools competing at this Carnival. Below is the list of our outstanding top 10 performers.
YEAR 3 GIRLS (56 runners)- Poppy Finucane 5th Place & Sophia Negus 7th Place.
YEAR 3 BOYS (63 runners)- Thomas Walsh 6th Place, Harrison Pazin 7th Place & Oliver Wever 9th Place.

Special thanks to all the children who represented the College and who regularly attended the training, as well as, all the parents who encouraged and supported their children during these training sessions.
I would also like to acknowledge the fantastic Primary teachers who assisted with the early morning supervision and also helped on the day. Finally, thanks to the Grounds and Maintenance Staff who once again prepared the ovals so well for this event.

NEWSFLASH
Congratulations to Bianca Petsos (4B) who has been selected to represent WA in the 2017 Swimming Team. Bianca is training hard as she will be competing at the School Sport Australia National Championships in December. Well done Bianca!
