Ms Judith Jones

Year 11 Business Guest Speaker

Wednesday morning of Week 3 saw our Year 11 Business students have the opportunity to hear from Mr Dan Murray, a successful businessman and MCA parent. Our three classes have been learning about the human resource function of businesses within the start-up stage of the business life cycle, as part of their undertaking of Unit 2 Topic 1. Students are about to embark on their second formative assessment of the course, a report investigating the acquisition strategies of an authentic start-up business, with Dan’s presentation providing the three start-up businesses they can choose to investigate.

Dan presented to the boys the human resource strategies relating to Envista, a consulting company for the national security sector, Ballistic Beer Co., an independent craft beer brewery, and Unbnd, an immersive technology creative agency. Boys learnt the importance of people, particularly ‘key hires’, in a start-up organisation, as well as the skills and qualities required of different employees. Dan shared the pros and cons of the various recruitment and selection strategies, as well as the importance of appropriate staff management and alignment of human resource objectives with overall business goals.

On behalf of the Year 11 Business staff and students we would like to express our appreciation for the time and effort Dan has dedicated to our subject, in both preparing for and presenting to us. We would also like to acknowledge one of our Year 11 Business teachers, Ms Alana Armitage, for the organisation of the morning.  Our Year 11 businessmen left Dan’s session inspired and well-equipped to begin their assessment piece, very grateful for the wonderfully generous people we have in our Marist community, who are so willing to share their knowledge and experiences with us.
