Success is what you make of it

If you asked your son what success meant to them, what response would you expect?  I’m sure it could range from good grades to being selected in the cross-country team, or perhaps even the big picture with job security and a regular salary.  What do you think they would say if you asked them what a successful person looked like? Again, I imagine the responses would be varied.

One of my favourite illustrations on success is ‘The Iceberg Illusion’ by artist Sylvia Duckworth.  This visual represents the stages of learning that an individual with a growth mindset goes through to be successful! Quite often what people see is the success, an A in English, but fail to see the dedication, hard work, discipline, disappointment, sacrifice, failure and persistence that people go through to achieve this success.

At Marist College Ashgrove we encourage all boys to be successful, or the best versions of themselves. Success does take hard work and as we approach exam block for our Year 11 boys, and assessment tasks in Middle school you are encouraged to be dedicated to your studies, to persist and to have a ‘not yet’ attitude.   Having a ‘not yet’ attitude to learning allows room for growth.  A TED talk by Carol Dweck reinforces the power of ‘yet’ for students who have yet to accomplish something.  Not succeeding ‘yet’ can provide our children with the confidence and persistence to keep trying and learning.

So, I encourage all boys who may not be achieving their goals yet, to be brave enough to try again!

Year 12 Unit 3 Progressive Reports

These reports were released last week and can be accessed via the parent portal.  If you would like further information please contact your son’s classroom teacher.

Unit 4 – students are now studying Unit 4 and have one piece of internal assessment left before external exams which will be held in Term 4, 2021.  It is imperative that boys are continually revising and summarising their notes from Unit 3 in preparation for these exams.

Year 11 Subject Changes

A reminder to those students looking at changing subjects at the completion of Unit 1 to see Ms Jen Smeed in the Academic Care by Wednesday 9 June, 2021.

Please email smeedj@marash.qld.edu.au or visit the Academic Care office (below the library) to organise a meeting. Following on from this, subject change forms can be issued which require signatures from relevant Curriculum Leaders, teachers and parents. If you have any questions about subject changes, please do not hesitate to contact the Senior Learning Leader, Ms Jen Smeed.

Year 11 Exam Block

Year 11 exam block in Week 5 provides students with the opportunity to study for their exams from home when they are not required on campus.  It is expected that during school hours boys are at home studying or are on campus completing assessment.

When travelling to and from the College boys are expected to be in full College uniform.  Boys are expected to have all necessary equipment required for their assessment and arrive to the examination room 10 minutes prior to the scheduled start.

Please help to ensure that your son eats a healthy diet, with plenty of water and sleep.

This exam block privilege is provided to students who are up-to-date with assessment for all subjects (General, Applied and Certificate courses). If your son has not submitted assessment or completed the tasks to a reasonable standard, he will be required to remain at school over this exam block in order to catch up on this work. You will be contacted later this week via email if this applies to your son. If you have any questions about this process please do not hesitate to contact the Senior Learning Leader, Ms Jennifer Smeed, at smeedj@marash.qld.edu.au.
