School for Student Leadership
The Snowy River Campus (SRC) – School for Student Leadership is a place where young people can exit their comfort zones and home environment. It challenges them to find their true beliefs and values, to work as a team and to reflect on their capacities to make a real difference in their communities. The SRC is full of diverse people, from rural to urban areas and from different cultures and backgrounds.
Our school has seven people that came to the SRC and it is divided into two groups. Our group is Taylors Lakes A, and for our CLP project we have decided to work on cleaning up our lake in Taylors Lakes, to create an even cleaner environment and a lake that everyone in Taylors Lakes can take pride in. We have planned many things we can do to achieve this, such as clean up days, a barbeque, tree planting and even asking the council to install some rubbish bins or signs.

Sora: My highlight from the last two weeks has been learning how to surf, as that was one of the things I wanted to do in my life for a long time. I was able to achieve that thanks to my great teachers from Mallacoota, which I have become great friends with, especially Ruben. I hope that I can master my skills in surfing so I can go up to Mallacoota one day to surf with Ruben!
Zoe: The highlight of my whole time here so far, is when we did bush dancing. I enjoyed it a bunch because it was just a bit of fun we could have with our friends and with new people. Especially when we got partnered up with people of the opposite gender. I had so much energy and I was able to use that in the dances and help others join in on the fun too. I wouldn’t stop smiling and it was great to see everyone have a smile on their face too. It was a great experience that I probably wouldn’t do normally, I mean it’s not like anyone would just think to do the WALTZ with another person you met 2 weeks ago. It took a bunch of people out of their comfort zone which we don’t do much and was good.
Emma: My favorite part of the last 2 weeks would have to be bridge building. We got to go somewhere secluded and had to work as a team. I helped my team members and they helped me. While we were working, I learnt a lot about the other team members. It was a fun experience because I could use my past knowledge and helped others. I also achieved my goal of being more helpful and got some good feedback from my buddy. My favorite part of bridge building was seeing a truck full of cows pass under the bridge.
Jonathan: The highlight of my time here at the Snowy River Campus has to be the weekly ritual where all of the student walk over to a secluded spot near the beach called “Spirit Spot”. The first time I went there, I felt so relaxed and peaceful, and it was a nice change of pace from the normally fast-paced and somewhat chaotic lessons at the SRC. I also enjoyed making new friends from all over Victoria and hearing their own stories and tales that they have experienced. One of my favourite pastimes that I have come to regularly do from my time at SRC is the Morning walks I take around the Campus. Every morning I am greeted by a nice sunrise and it is really enjoyable to take in the beauty that Marlo presents.
Prana: My highlight from this week was when Darren Mcubbin came in as a Guest speaker to talk about beliefs and values. He showed us the importance of standing up for our beliefs and rights even if there are some people who question in it. We played a game where he narrated us a story and we had to rank the characters from best to worst. Almost everyone had different answers and even though we were allowed to disagree and debate we still had to give respect to everyone’s opinions. Later on for the evening class Darren Mcubbin hosted theatrical sports. We were divided into two teams where we played multiple theatre games and unfortunately my team lost but the room was still filled with fun and laughter and everyone was having a blast.
Claude: My highlight from my time here at the School For student leadership is probably when some people here went on a bike ride to Marlo, there was about 15 of us that were going on the 20km ride, we rode down the freeway for a bit and turned into a track that leads through the forest. After we stopped for lunch and headed back a different way from which we came, we went through a different forest and rode some different tracks before joining up back on the freeway to head back. I felt great after the ride was finished, I saw some great scenery and hit some nice tracks, it was an awesome experience.
