Zone Athletics Carnival

On Tuesday the 8th of June, a small selection of students set out on a mission to achieve their athletic destiny. It was a frosty start to the morning but this in no way hindered the student’s enthusiasm and high hopes for glory.

It was a great day with many of the students from Lake Illawarra High, up against some very strong athletes, but in spite of that, and in typical Lake Illawarra High fashion, the students gave it their all and they all did the school and the community proud. Some stand out performances were as follows; Jamiee-Lea Anderson secured a 3rd place in discus, Teileigha Lawrence came 2nd in long jump, Alex Norris was a multi event super star who came 3rd in high jump, and 2nd in javelin, Liam Ramsay came 2nd in shot put and 3rd in javelin and Thomas Hoyland secured a 3rd place in long jump. All the students should be very proud of their efforts and conduct on the day.

Move It Australia

A group of twenty, Year 7 and 8 girls have been participating the Australian Government’s ‘Move It Australia’ program which has been run by the NRL during their Friday afternoon sport sessions.

The delivery of the program has been through non-contact forms of Rugby League. The sessions are structured to meet the Australian Governments ‘Find Your 30’ objective which highlights the importance of engaging in at least 30 minutes of physical activity each day.

As part of the program, the girls were invited to an Inter School League Tag Gala Day playing against other schools that have completed the program, held at Bomaderry Sporting Complex. The Gala Day also provided an opportunity for participants to engage with local sporting organisations in the hope that they may continue to be active outside of school hours. Each participant received an incentive pack which included a football, water bottle, bag and a hat.

On the day the girls played four games, playing against girls from Year 7 to 12, they managed to win two of their games. All students represented the school with pride and displayed great sportsmanship on the day. The girls were also lucky enough to meet and talk to Kezie Apps, an Australian Women’s Rugby League representative.

PDHPE Snapshot

Students in years 7, 8, 9 and 10 have been working hard in PDHPE this term, learning how to make informed decisions related to health, safety, well being and physical activity.

Year 7 students have explored the concept of ‘Risk Taking’. This includes positive and negative risks, such as taking on new challenges, making new friends, as well as risks such as alcohol use, cyber safety and decision making.

Year 8 students have been exploring the topic a ‘Wealth of Health’. In this unit, students learn about the components of health and the importance of a balanced lifestyle. They build the knowledge and skills required to plan for optimal health at all stages of life, overcoming barriers as they come along.

Year 9 students have been focusing on developing an understanding of ‘Sexual Health’. Students analysed a range of issues relating to sexual health including relationships, influences on health decision making and sexual health issues affecting young people. This unit helped students to develop skills to think analytically about their attitudes, behaviours and possible consequences related to sexual health.

Year 10 wrapped up a unit on diversity and inclusion, which included their assessment task ‘Absolutely Everybody’. They have recently begun studying the unit ‘Hitting the Road’. This unit will build on prior knowledge of road safety and will focus on the learner driver. Students will explore safe road use, including pedestrian, passenger and driver safety. Students will identify and evaluate the broad range of factors that have the potential to impact on the decisions and behaviours of young people. This will culminate in the excursion to the BStreet Smart show at Qudos Arena in August and their assessment task.

Students have also been participating in a range of sports, games and activities including Gymnastics, Netball, Soccer, Hockey, Fitness and Tennis.

Please take the opportunity to discuss these health concepts with your children to help broaden their knowledge and understanding and hopefully help them make healthier life choices; now and in the future. Some useful websites are listed below.
