Mock Interviews 2021

Sixty students from year 10 and our seniors, participated in the annual Mock Interviews at Lake Illawarra High School. Various industry representatives volunteered their time to listen to each student present and talk about themselves, as if they were actually doing an interview. For some students, this was their first time to do such an activity and all who participated have received personal feedback on their interview.

I would like to personally thank the following businesses who came to our school this year:

  • R2go Training
  • University of Wollongong
  • Peak Sports and Learning
  • HVTC
  • 1300 apprentice
  • Bluescope

Know Your Trades Workshop

Year 9-12 interested students were invited to participate in our first workshop, designed to understand different construction careers. Industry representatives volunteered their time to attend and explain in practical ways, on careers associated with construction: bricklaying, scaffolding, electrical services and pest control. Following an excellent lunch for presenters and students, organised by Mrs Stephens and her Hospitality classes, students then listened on how to gain apprenticeships or traineeships, in a variety of fields and through different pathways.

This activity was planned in cooperation with Jennifer Watts the Senior Project Officer Regional Industry Education Partnerships for Training Services NSW.

I would like to personally thank Jennifer and the following businesses who came to our school this year:

  • KJ Scaffolding
  • Thurgate Electrical
  • B & C Pest Control
  • Land Team Surveyors
  • GJ Gardner homes
  • Australian Training Company
  • TAFE NSW

Industry Tours 2021

R2GO students in Years 8 and 10 have had the opportunity to attend different businesses to talk to employers, explore different jobs and understand the expectations of gaining a job in different industries. Students have been visited McDonalds at Warilla, Stocklands Shellharbour and the Novotel this term. All students who participated enjoyed the experience and we would like to thank our local businesses for volunteering their time to help our students gain an insight and build confidence in talking to adults and employers.

Choosing Career Paths

Various activities to help students in gaining knowledge and understanding in preparation for 2022 have been organised this term. Past students who have either continued their studies or have entered the work force returned to the school to talk to our current senior students. One of our speakers, Josh Gonzales, who actually works at Lake Illawarra High School explained to the students different pathways and how ideas and options can change over time. It was great to hear their personal insights, tips on how to approach the HSC and what they would have done differently. Thank you to our speakers Reece Castle, Brodie Mitchell, Jasmine Muldoon, Jennifer Grujevski and Josh Gonzales.

Being an In2uni school, allows us to have close connections with the University of Wollongong. 'Future Me' workshops to assist students in understanding options and personal goals are always and excellent way in making decisions. Recently, local tertiary institutions have visited our school to explain courses and pathways to senior students and selected Yr 10 classes. This was a a great event where students listened to the following businesses: TAFE NSW, UOW College, Kiama Community College, ACCM

Year 12 individual interviews are well underway, with each Year 12 student in preparation for their future pathways. A follow up letter explaining the information discussed at interview will be sent to students and their parents and I would like to invite parents/carers to contact me if you have questions or concerns regarding these interviews.

Work Ready Program 2021

Students in Year 10 are invited to participate in WORK READY workshops during each term. This is primarily to assist them in being ready for work experience at any time during the school year. It will include information on work experience, what is is expected by employers, safety in the work place and more. After participating in the 2 hour workshop, students will then be assisted in applying for work experience in an area of their interest.

At Lake Illawarra High School, students in Year 9 or 10 are able to do work experience during the last week of Term 1 to 3, as well as in late Term 4. Students are required to be over 14 years old to do work experience, have proven a positive attitude and have participated in the Work Ready workshop. If students are keen to do more than one week to help with their future planning/pathway, it is possible, they simply need to discuss things with me, the Careers Adviser.

It is important that students are active to secure work experience as early as possible, in order not to miss out on their first choice of location. Students can find their own work experience, but if support is required the Careers team is ready to help.
