Portraits of the Year 7 Coordinators by Hector Rowe (7A)

Congratulations to our fabulous Year 7 students who are working hard on many levels as part of our GEC valuing success. Firstly, Hector Rowe (7A) hand drew the coordinators to add to our Year 7 wall. His fine line and ability to capture the essence of us was remarkable. Thank you Hector, Ms Cordingley and Mr Sherman congratulate your artistic skills.

Artistic talent at GEC continues

Imagine having your artwork judged by legendary artists, Reko Rennie, Beci Orpin and Ken Done against Australia’s best young talent across Australia. That is exactly what happened to Lucas Kennedy (7C) and he was chosen as the best in his section. Lucas won the TDF Kids inaugural Art Awards and secured himself $2,000 prize money and the reputation of Australia’s up and coming new artist. Congratulations Lucas – we are very proud of you and we can’t wait to see your next creation.

2021 Model United Nations Conference

Two of our Year 7 students have participated at the McKinnon Model United Nations Conference. The conference re-enacts the United Nations Assembly around a contemporary issue and this year is was; ‘Rewrite the Future: Quality Education for All.’ Lucas Kennedy (7C) was part of the Brazil delegates and learnt some Portuguese to open and close the country’s position speech. Alice Jayaweera (7C) was part of the Indonesian delegates and she learned the language to deliver the opening and closing lines for her country’s position. It was wonderful to see our students mentored by the Year 9B and Year 11 teams and learn the democratic process of changing the world for a better future amongst students from all over Victoria. Congratulations Lucas and Alice for being excellent ambassadors for Glen Eira College.

For parents:

It is timely reminder as we settle into the last of the Autumn sun that our students develop good learning habits and uphold the GEC 5 and values. Please could you support your child to wear the GEC uniform with pride to show they understand the expectations of participating in the school culture. Remember, students have the uniform policy and photos in their planner to help them recognise the expectations of the school uniform. Remember, the days are getting colder, no beanies but GEC coloured scarves are encouraged to keep everyone warm.

At times, students are choosing to leave their lockers unlocked for convenience, but that leaves their belongings open to the world. Although we pride ourselves on the honesty of our students, it is best to lock lockers and ensure bags and personal items are safe. Remember, a locked locker is a safe place. If students have lost or misplaced any items, please check lost property or the Junior School Office. We know that uniforms (jackets & jumpers), books, calculators and stationary are expensive to replace so always check lost property. The best learning is achieved when students are well equipped for learning so remember to be ready with all the right equipment. Please help your child to be ready for learning.

Lastly, as we head into another time of remote learning, know that the Year 7 Coordinators and teachers are ready to support your child to achieve their best under all circumstances. We are only a phone call or email away and we are focused on making the remote experience best for everyone.

Stay safe and stay well.

Year 8 News 🙂

Hello everyone, my name is Genevieve Salinas and I am in Year 8! I'm currently a blue/brown belt and I train with Taketani Judo Academy. At the beginning of May, I participated in a Judo Victoria competition. I had three fights against other girls in my division. I was quite nervous before my fights however as soon as I started fighting, I gained much confidence and fought my best. The three other competitors fought well and each fight presented its own challenges. I felt incredibly accomplished after winning all of the fights and earning a gold medal!! Even though I did well, I still have plenty to learn and practice to enhance my judo skills and improve my techniques.

Year 9 News

Well done to Year 9 on finishing their NAPLAN in week 4 this term. Most of you now understand why it is important to learn new concepts on a daily basis because there was no preparation required to do well in NAPLAN. Also, your Common Assessment Task (CAT) scores are up on XUNO to inform you about your grades in each subject.

Apart from academics, it is great to see many Year 9s are actively participating very well in sports and other extracurricular activities at school.

The Year 9 Netball team played beautifully and was able to get into the GEC Netball finals. They were not the winners and lost the final match by 4 points, but we are proud of their effort and enthusiasm which was seen in their participation. Thank you Ms Byrnes for organising this event.

Another great opportunity for Year 9s  this term was participating in the United Nations Conference at McKinnon Secondary College led by our experienced teacher Ms Cordingley. It was another successful event.

In week 6, many Year 9s went on intermediate sports for  Soccer, Badminton, Netball and Footy. It is very impressive to see both girls and boys are participating equally in these extracurricular activities.

We are celebrating Education Week and Reconciliation Week in our school. There are a lot of activities happening and we encourage all students to get involved.

A huge thank you to all parents for your support in assisting your child to do their best at school at all times. This term we are running connection assemblies every week for 10 to 15 minutes to communicate all the important information to students featured in their school planner, as often students do not read this carefully.

What has been discussed so far is Behaviour for learning, Uniform at school, the Bullying and Harassment Policy and the Homework Policy. Also most importantly is how to set up their SMART Learning Goals in their planners. There are many more to come.

We are seeking your support here again to check the planner of your child when possible, to guide them how they can prioritise their work and have a good study routine at home as well.
