Downball Competition

On Friday 21 May, officials from Downball Australia made their way to Koonung for our very first downball competition at our school. Battle was joined, balls were bounced, and when the chalk dust settled Angus McEvoy (seniors) and Johnny Suares (juniors) were crowned victors. Special thanks to Jet Cheung who organised the competition to come to Koonung.  Thank you also to the House Captains for supporting him, especially referees, Alan Liang and Matt Lim.

Congratulations to Jack Brennan

Well done to Year 7F student Jack Brennan, who has been selected to join Team Vic Hockey 12 Years and Under Boys team. We congratulate Jack and wish him well for the season ahead.

Interschool Sport

Congratulations to the following teams for winning their matches in the Division competition, they will all go on to the next stage (EMR). Keep an eye on Compass for the new event and ensure you provide payment/consent as soon as possible. If you are no longer able to attend the event please let the teacher in charge know as soon as possible so they can replace you with another student.

Division Cross Country

On 30 April  56 students ventured to Ruffey Lake Park with Miss Prosenak to compete in the Division Cross Country. I was most grateful to both our students and some of the Deakin pre-service teachers who were very helpful on the day.   The students all had a great day and it was fantastic to see them standing on both the starting and finish line cheering on their peers. More than half (30) of our  students were placed in the top 10 in their race and made it through to the EMR competition which will be held on 22 July  at Yarra Glen Racecourse. Congratulations again to all and good luck for the next stage.

Girls AFL

Koonung has always produced some incredible footballers and 2021 has been no different. On Thursday 20 May, 25 of our Intermediate students headed to Elgar Park to participate in the Girls AFL competition. The girls were in great hands with the coaching assistance of Year 12 student Aleisha Singh and ex-students Amanda Ling and Iona Cameron. It didn’t take long for the girls to gel and start working together as a team, leading to some amazing plays and goals! All 25 girls contributed to the 3/3 wins on the day and we are looking forward to moving through to the EMR competition on Thursday 22 July. Thank you to Heidi Pearce and Karly Spiridis for helping with umpiring and scoring on the day.

Reminders for Interschool Sport

  1. Check Compass regularly for information about team sign-ups.
  2. Please ensure payment and consent is provided by the due date (at least 3 days prior to the event, otherwise it will result in the student being unable to attend the event)
  3. If students decide to pull out of the event before the day, they MUST let either the teacher coaching the team OR Miss Prosenak know ASAP so that we can find another student as a replacement. If not, the team may not have enough players and be unable to go. Simply leaving your payment/consent unattended on Compass is not enough. This helps us to plan or amend bus bookings, staffing and costs for the day.

Athletics Carnival

The Koonung Athletics Carnival was held on Friday 14 May at Hagenauer Reserve in Box Hill. This was a great event, well organised and a fantastic vibe. Our coordinator of Interschool Sports and Carnivals made the brave call to go ahead despite some dire weather forecasts and it was the right decision. We were all treated to nice sunshine, fun activities and great competition. The Live Life barbecue kept the wonderful smell of sausages and vegan burgers in the air and the music mix was very inspiring. Thanks again to Sam, the student leaders and staff who kept the program running so smoothly and to all the students who attended in good spirits. Thank you also to our Arts Captains, Jasmine Nicol and Erin Lawson, who provided the photos for this article.

Marianne Lee

Principal

After an incredibly awful week of weather the skies cleared on Friday 14 May for Koonung’s annual Athletics Carnival. It was wonderful to finally be able to come together as a community after a very long year off. It was pleasing to see so many students in attendance, participating in events, participating in novelty games or just sitting on the lawn together enjoying one another’s company. A big thank you to all the House Captains, Sport Captains, Art Captains, Middle Years Captains, Live Life Captains, music/tech gurus and all other students for helping out on the day. I would also like to thank staff who assisted with set up/pack up, working on the BBQ, First Aid and running of events. Congratulations to all students who placed first or second in their events who will be going through to the Division Track and Field event being held on Tuesday 24 August at Tom Kelly Reserve – please keep an eye on Compass for more details. Finally, congratulations to Conder for taking out the title!
