Incursions

Bringing opportunities to our students.

Community Access Program

As part of the Community Access program, students in LEAP purchased presents for their mothers, grandmothers and carers. Students also made cards during their social skills lesson. Of course it wouldn’t be Mother’s day without pampering mum with breakfast in bed; therefore, our students used the omelette recipe they have learnt in Food Tech as part of the Mother’s Day breakfast in bed.

SRC Leadership Day

Merrylands High School leaders from all years were able to experience an incursion in partnership with Creating Chances. Creating Chances is an educational organisation with the motive of accentuating leadership, communication and social skills which are quintessential for society. A few advocates from the organisation came to provide an interactive and informative demonstration of the aforementioned skills to the SRC. This demonstration involved a plethora of collaborative and hands-on tasks which invigorated the students to work together, teaching them the acronym SHARP. SHARP is an acronym that can be applied to various situations that our leaders are now able to effectively use. This acronym is used to highlight the five key aspects that a leader needs to be able to accomplish in order to lead the future generations. These being Safety, High Expectations, Achievement, Respect and Preparation. The SRC were introduced to new situations that they may not have witnessed. The activities that leaders participated in were diverse and educational, which included programs such as podcasts and interviews which encouraged students to inquire about each other and anecdotal perspectives. Overall, with the aid of this incursion the leaders are now equipped with the experience to allow them to succeed in society and lead by example.

Girls Get Active Day

This term, female students from Years 7-10 at MHS participated in an incursion called “Girls Get Active” Day. This was a safe and aspirational context for girls to try different sports by engaging them with specialised sport coaches from NSW Sports and Cumberland City Council. This was a great opportunity for our female students to be part of variety of games to enhance their sporting skills. Our female students were highly engaged and enjoyed the organised activities on the day. It was remarkable learning experience for them which boosted their confidence level and taught them how to effectively work in a team environment.

Harmony Day 2021

It has always been one of the biggest events of the year at MHS and we were lucky enough to bring back our performances in 2021. Students worked together to create an outstanding show enjoyed by our students and staff.

To watch the full performance, go to our Facebook page or on Instagram.

National Reconciliation Week Morning Tea

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (ATSI) members of our MHS community were invited to a Morning Tea that focused upon the acknowledgment and address of National Sorry Day and the start of Reconciliation Week. Parents/caregivers, students and teachers shared in acknowledging the wrong doings of the past and identified the current strengths, initiatives and unity amongst the students of the MHS community.  The actions of the past have caused great trauma to ATSI peoples and MHS strives to reflect upon how we can all play a part in the healing and reconciliation process for our ATSI community.

Cross Country

After a week of uncertain rain, MHS students finally got the chance to participate in their cross country races! Well done to all students who participated and tried their best!

Athletics Carnival

On the 15th of June we held our MHS Athletics Carnival. It was amazing to see students participating in a range of track and field events, especially as many had no previous experience in some disciplines! We hope to see this enthusiasm carried on into future carnivals.
