Term 2 Week 4

English

Reading

This week we have been planning and video recording a book talk . A book talk is a short presentation about a book with the goal of convincing others to read it. The students used their knowledge of persuasive language to encourage others to read their book. We uploaded these videos to Seesaw to share with our peers. Next week we will be starting our new unit on making connections and predicting.

Writing

This week students have continued to develop their skills in writing to persuade their reader. We have looked at using a variety of conjunctions and transition words to make the writing more persuasive. Students have demonstrated confidence in using the OREO structure and modality words to develop their arguments persuasively.

Next week students will complete this unit of writing showing their understanding of how to persuade the reader of changing their opinion through effective persuasive language devices.

Word Study

Over the past two weeks we have been learning Rule 17: FSZL gang. We usually double f, z, s and l if they come after a single vowel and are at the end of a one-syllable word. For example, fluff, buzz, stuff and less all follow this rule. Next week we will start exploring Rules 25 and 23: ck and dge. These rules tell us that we use ‘ck’ 2 letter after ă, ĕ, ĭ, ŏ, ŭ and we use ‘dge’ 3 letter after ă, ĕ, ĭ, ŏ, ŭ.

Examples of Rule 25: back, neck, trick, lock, stuck,

Examples of Rule 23: badge, wedge, bridge, fudge

Mathematics

In Mathematics, this week we have been learning to understand what length is and how to measure and compare length. Next week we will continue to work on addition with a focus on written strategies and worded problems. We will also investigate perimeter as the length around the boundary.

Unit of Inquiry

Our inquiry into ‘Rules and laws support communities’ has focused on identifying which communities the students are a citizen of. This has led them to think about the responsibilities they have within their communities.

Next week we will inquire into the different levels of government and their responsibilities. The Mayor of Bayside is visiting BPS to answer pre written questions by the students about his role as a leader of the local community and how local government makes laws and supports its citizens.

Wellbeing

We have continued to focus on strategies that support emotional and physical wellbeing. This highlights the value of eating and sleeping well, having a balance of active and creative play, and doing things that make you feel good.

As the term has progressed teachers are also incorporating activities such as 'circle time' and 'bucket filling' to support students in developing greater empathy and awareness of the impact of their actions on others.
