Learning In Foundation!

READING

Students in Foundation have been learning to explicitly recognise rhyme and repetition of words and language. As you may be aware, rhyme and repetition is often used in children's literature and in music. These 2 elements help children articulate words, modulate voices (practicing pitch, volume, and inflection) and enunciate clearly by saying them over and over without fear of criticism.

During modelled reading, our session always begin with a rhyme. Students learn to anticipate rhyming words/repeated patterns, preparing them to make predictions when they read. Rhyme is important for writing too, as it helps children understand that words that share common sounds often share common letters. E.g. cat and bat both end with -at.

Here is an example of a song/rhyme recently shared with students:

WRITING

Students have been introduced to graphic organiser (an organisational tool) known as a Venn diagram. They have identified and recorded facts about animals and have compared these to determine how animals are different and the same.

MATHEMATICS

In Maths, students have been revising the days of the week. It is important to know the sequence of days, as it helps children become aware of when certain events are going to happen. Students have also been learning about different times of the day and have been connecting days of the week to familiar events and actions e.g. Friday afternoon we go to the library.

We encourage you to engage in discussions with your child about days of the week. Question them as to what they or the family does at particular times on particular days of the week. Get your child to schedule events on the family calendar and encourage them to 'get ready' for school  by noting the day of the week.

Days of the Week from the Addams Family is a great song to learn the days of the week!

RELIGION

This term, students have been learning about God's creation. We will be having our Foundation Level Mass on Thursday, 27th May at 10am.

Leading up to our Foundation Mass, students have been learning the song 'Cosmic Hymn of Praise' to celebrate God's wonderful creation.

Learning At Home!

We ask students to continue their daily reading, and parents to continue to record books and observations in the children's Reading Diary/log book.

M100W Learning - We encourage Foundation students to practise recognising, reading and learning these words at home. Once your child has learnt the level of words glued in their Work Book, please sign the page and this will signify they will need to be tested. Testing occurs every Friday & once mastery is noted, the next level of words is pasted into their book.
