Science Education

According to all known laws of aviation, there is no way a bee should be able to fly. Its wings are too small to get its fat little body off the ground. The bee, of course, flies anyway, because bees don't care what humans think is impossible.

The Bee Movie

🌱 Environmental scientist/Scienzato ambientale

Environmental scientists measure and record features of the environment and study, assess, and develop methods of controlling or minimising the harmful effects of human activity on the environment.

🐝 World Bee Day, May 20

The main purpose of World Bee Day, is to spread awareness of the significance of bees and other pollinators for our survival. World Bee Day is an excellent opportunity to put bees at the centre of the national conversation for a day and encourage actions that create more bee-friendly landscapes.

🎱 Foundation

Physical Sciences Unit: On the move!

Learning Intention:

Students will be able to identify and describe pushing, pulling, bouncing, sliding, rolling and spinning

Success Criteria:

Students can physically represent their understanding of different types of movement.

Learning Intention:

Students will be able to investigate how far things roll on different surfaces.

Success Criteria:

Students can create a graph using streamers to record investigation findings/results.

🤸‍♀️ Year 1/2:

Year 1/2 have been speaking Italian and using gestures in their Science learning this term. Please see below, the new Italian language we have introduced in Science:

Piega: Fold/Bend

Taglio: Cut

Carta: Paper

Allungare: Stretch

Chemical Sciences Unit: Bend It! Stretch It!

Learning Intention:

Students will be able to identify objects made from different materials that can be scrunched.

Success Criteria:

Students can predict and explore which sheets of material can be scrunched the smallest.

Learning Intention:

Students will be able to explore and identify elastic materials.

Success Criteria:

Students can make claims about which jelly snake is the most elastic.

👩‍🦽 Years 3-4:

Chemical Sciences Unit: Problem Based Learning (STEM for Humanity)

Learning Intention: Students will be able to continue brainstorming solutions to real-world problems.Success Criteria: Students can create a prototype for an assistive device to help children with a disability.
Learning Intention: Students will be able to continue exploring solutions to real-world problems.Success Criteria: Students can reflect on their Design Thinking Process, for their assistive device to help children with a disability.

💡 Years 5-6:

Physical Sciences Unit: Seeing the light

Year 5/6 have been speaking Italian and using gestures in their Science learning this term. Please see below, the new Italian language we have introduced in Science:

La luce: The light

La linea: The line

La riflessione: The reflection

La rifrazione: The refraction

Arcobaleno: Rainbow

Learning Intention:

Students will be able to understand what refraction is and when it occurs.

Success Criteria:

Students can complete a rainbow and pencil and water investigation to investigate refraction.

Learning Intention:

Students will be able to visit a website explaining how we see. Using this information from the website, students draw a labelled diagram explaining how we see.

Success Criteria:

Students can summarise their learning during the ‘Seeing the Light’ Unit.

🍞👩‍🦽TAKING ACTION!

This year we will continue to collect bread tags for 'Aussie Bread Tags for Wheelchairs' and we will also begin collecting plastic bottle tops. Last year, the students were moved to action when they discovered that many young shearwater birds hatching on Lord Howe Island were dying because of the plastic they were consuming which includes plastic bottle tops.  There are collection tubs in the Science Room, so please encourage and support your children to collect bread tags and plastic bottle tops to care for Our Common Home.
