Year 5/6 News

Fortnight in Review

The Year 5 children had the opportunity to visit and immerse themselves in secondary school life at Santa Maria College. The students participated in activities including Art, Digital Technologies, Science and English. They also were lucky enough to be in the audience of the technical rehearsal of Santa Maria's production; 'Spirit of the Theatre...Broadway Never Dies.' The feedback from students was overwhelmingly positive and the singing continued on the bus ride back to school!

Literacy 📚

Students have continued to explore persuasive and expository texts, analysing structure and language features in variety of texts.

As part of our Grammar and Spelling foci, students enthusiastically engaged in a musical activity, exploring plurals through the use of song!  Students listened to the following plural rap, using it as a mentor to create their own rap, identifying plurals where we add 'ies.'

Two Stars and a Wish! ⭐️

A formative assessment technique in writing that we will soon engage our students in, is called, 'Two Stars and a Wish!' Giving the opportunity for the students to self reflect, students give themselves two stars in two different areas they feel they have excelled in.  Then, the students will give themselves a wish in an area they want to improve on. This will help to empower the students as owners of their learning, which will ultimately lead to improvement in writing performance.

Religion & Wellbeing 🕯

In Religion and Wellbeing, students identified ways individuals can show courage, responsibility and compassion within our school. They connected their understanding of persuasive texts by developing an 'elevator pitch' (a short, sharp speech which could be used to spark interest in an idea, project or product on an elevator ride!) The elevator pitch focused on an idea to evoke change and demonstrate leadership within our school setting. We look forward to some of these ideas taking shape!

At home Maths activity 🎲

To support our current unit of Shape, encourage your child to notice 3D objects in the environment. Encourage them to identify the features of the object (faces, vertices, and edges). Pose 'predict what will the net of the 3D object look like?'

By Year 5/6, it is expected that all children are able to automatically recall their multiplication facts (times tables). To continue to revise this at home, we suggest playing a fun game of 'Multiplication Squares.'
