Careers

Greetings from the Careers Office Desk
Plans for year ten work experience are in full swing. We have several students heading to far flung destinations and we wish them all the best of luck while they are away. Students are expected to make a recording or take photos while they are on their placements to present to the class when they return.
The year eleven tertiary institutions trip was a huge success. Post camp catch up interviews are now happening with the students who attended. It is interesting to note that many have changed their minds and have found new and exciting directions for their academic futures. Many others have had their aspirations confirmed.
The year nine Careers Week details are being finalised for the last week of June. A trip to the Horsham Career Expo and to Deakin and SW TAFE in Warrnambool are just a couple of the fantastic activities that the students will participate in.
Eleven year nine students have signed up to take part in the RIST Wool Overview program that is beginning with a trip to Melbourne next week. They will visit a wool auctioning centre and then the wool museum in Geelong on the way back. Visits to see shearing and working dogs are planned for next term.
A small group of year ten students are mid-way through the Trade Taster Program being run each Thursday afternoon in partnership with Westvic. Students report that they have enjoyed a variety of trades including plumbing and hospitality.
Monthly lunch time inspirational speakers are planned for the year twelves. Last month students enjoyed Miss GB’s soup and slices while they listened to Paul Watkins. Paul shared with them his grit and determination to achieve his personal goals. This month an equally amazing person will share their challenging journey with them.
The Careers Office is full of recourses and students are always welcomed to drop by and enjoy the toasty interior on these chilly days.

Youthrive Victoria University Scholarships
Youthrive Victoria University Scholarship applications are NOW OPEN and CLOSE August 9th 2019. Scholarships include $10,000 per year for three years plus mentoring and leadership development.
Since 2011, Youthrive Victoria (formerly the Macpherson Smith Rural Foundation) has provided over $1.4 million in scholarships to young rural Victorians to support their university education. We are also pleased to have supported over 350 young people (many of them scholarship applicants) through participation in our Mentoring and Young Rural Leaders programs and Alumni network.
Each school in regional and rural Victoria is invited to endorse the applications of three Year 12 students who plan to attend university in Victoria in 2020.
Full details of the application processes are available at:
www.youthrivevictoria.org.au/scholarships
Key information:
Key Selection Criteria for Youthrive Victoria University Scholarships
- Demonstrated leadership in their local community and leadership potential (e.g. school leadership; participation or volunteering in community organisations, events, sporting clubs; sharing family responsibilities; extra-curricular roles at school etc.).
- Managing and/or overcoming personal disadvantage i.e. financial disadvantage, cultural challenges, social challenges, remoteness, disability, significant loss, trauma or other hardship.
- Commitment to learning and academic ability.
- Demonstrated interest and passion for living in rural/regional Victoria and an intent to return to rural/regional Victoria.
- The level of likely impact on their life and rural/regional Victoria if awarded the scholarship.
- References confirming examples of leadership, academic ability and potential, experience of hardship and how they have handled personal challenges.
All applications must be endorsed by the school Principal or a delegated senior staff member who acts on the principal’s behalf. Applications without this endorsement will be deemed ineligible. The endorser needs to fill in a supporting reference online. We find these references particularly important in the selection process.
Each school decides how to select up to three applicants for endorsement. For example, your school may choose up to three students for endorsement based on your existing knowledge of their merit and need, or you may invite draft applications from multiple Year 12 students from which you will agree to endorse the best three. Please don’t ask multiple students to apply online and then decide who to endorse.
Once your students apply they will be given a code number. They will then need to supply the principal (or delegate) with the link and code for the application to be endorsed. This requires the endorser to click on the link and provide comments that highlight financial need; leadership capacity, community involvement; academic capacity and personal qualities. Students submit their applications by midnight on 9th August.
Principal/delegate Endorsements must be submitted by midnight on 14th August 2019. There is a detailed FAQ page to assist with any questions at:
https://www.youthrivevictoria.org.au/what-we-do/scholarships/uni-scholarships/faq/
Please encourage applicants and referees to read all information in detail. Any questions can be directed to info@youthrivevic.org.au
Youthrive Victoria also offers Rural Chances Vocational Scholarships for students planning to go to TAFE or do apprenticeships. Rural Chances Scholarships will open on Monday August 19th and close on Friday 18th October. More information will be sent in Term 3.
