A Word from the Principal

On Friday I was privileged to join a group of professionals at the Sisters of Charity Heritage Centre in Sydney. It was timely to revisit the footsteps of this wonderful order of nuns who were and continue to be, at the forefront of outreach. They have an extra vow, that of service to the poor. Whether it be the poor in spirit, body or mind. With Christ at the centre, they look outward to others to see what needs to be done, and then do it.

It was opportune to have this visit on the cusp of International Women’s Day - a day set aside to reflect on the rich contribution women have made to the fields of medicine, science, technology, justice, education and society.  For me, it highlighted again the tremendous courage and intelligence of the Sisters. Women who travelled far afield to make a difference - to be “extensively useful”. Nurses, teachers, administrators and carers they built hospitals and schools. They took on the establishments in an effort to make change, and in the process have made history. In fact, their legacy is inspiring. Their message of courage, compassion and justice continues through their legacy of the many schools they started and the many health services they continue to provide. May our students rise to the challenge of women around the world, may they walk in the footsteps of the Sisters of Charity and make a difference to those around them.

We can all be people of thought and action.

We can choose a fairer world.

We can advocate for the voiceless.

We can challenge the unjust.

We can respond to need where we see it.
