As we come to the end of the Easter Season, we reflect up the glory of God’s creation and marvel in this cold winter weather. In the northern hemisphere, where much of our Church rituals have been developed, they are enjoying the warmth of summer and the joys of new life. Quite a contrast really. None the less we enjoy the same celebrations and unite as one people. Our celebrations unite us. The Feast of the Sacred heart, is one such example.

The heart has always been seen as the "centre" or essence of a person ("the heart of the matter," "you are my heart," "take it to heart," etc.) and the wellspring of our emotional lives and love ("you break my heart," "my heart sings," etc.) Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus is devotion to Jesus Christ Himself, but in the particular ways of meditating on his interior life and on His threefold love -- His divine love, His burning love that fed His human will, and His sensible love that affects His interior life.

Pope Pius XII of blessed memory writes on this topic in his 1956 encyclical, Haurietis Aquas (On Devotion To The Sacred Heart).

The Friday that follows the Second Sunday in Time After Pentecost is the Feast of the Sacred Heart which brings to mind all the attributes of His Divine Heart mentioned above. Many Catholics prepare for this Feast by beginning a Novena to the Sacred Heart on the Feast of Corpus Christi, which is the Thursday of the week before. On the Feast of the Sacred Heart itself, we can gain a plenary indulgence by making an Act of Reparation to the Sacred Heart.

From the earliest days of the Church, "Christ's open side and the mystery of blood and water were meditated upon, and the Church was beheld issuing from the side of Jesus, as Eve came forth from the side of Adam. It is in the eleventh and twelfth centuries that we find the first unmistakable indications of devotion to the Sacred Heart. Through the wound in the side, the wound in the Heart was gradually reached, and the wound in the Heart symbolized the wound of love."

How do we put this in our current day context? The Feast of the Sacred Heart is a time for us to consider those that are not coping with life’s challenges - the vulnerability that comes with being homeless, the desperation of seeking refuge from domestic violence or the loneliness of old age. By reaching into the depths of our heart how do we help? What do we do to reach out and lend a helping hand? How do I act with justice and compassion? Next Friday June 28 we celebrate the Feast of the Sacred Heart with a combined Mass with St Mel’s School commencing at 12:00 p.m. at St Mel’s Church. On this day we will offer to St Vincent de Paul our donations of non-perishable goods such as blankets, tinned food, toiletries, and other items that will be helpful, through the openness of our heart. I encourage you to send along such items before Friday 28 June so we can pass them onto St Vincent de Paul. For more information read the Catholic Identity page.

Finally congratulations to Riley Okely who has earned the Australian Scout Medallion. Riley is a member of the 1st Kialla Scout Troop. In order to attain this achievement Riley has shown initiative in tackling this challenge, sustained effort over many months and years, plus self discipline, team work, and leadership. Only a small percentage reach this level. Well done Riley!

Something to ponder…Instead of being just a church that welcomes and receives by keeping the doors open, let us try also to be a church that finds new roads, that is able to step outside itself and go to those who do not attend Mass, to those who have quit or are indifferent.
