Year 7 Ancient Egypt

Dr Janet Davey - Egyptologist Year 7 Ancient Egypt
Lucy English
All of the Year 7’s had a guest lecture from Dr Davey who is a Forensic Egyptologist. Dr Davey has investigated mummies, using a CT scanner, which told the scientists the gender and age of the mummy, and when it had died. She showed us mummies she had examined, and how scientists have replicated some of the bodies that have been embalmed. We also learnt a lot about the Gods that the Egyptians worshipped. We learnt how Isis, Osiris, Seth and Nephthys were all siblings, and how Isis and Osiris married each other and their son was Horace. She also showed us copies of Egyptian artefacts; statues, baskets, two types of linen cloth, and gave us heaps of ideas for our artefacts project.

I found Dr Davey the Egyptologist very interesting and I found that during the process of mummification they actually don't take out the heart they keep it in there and just placed a scarab beetle on top of the heart. Overall, it was a great experience!

Meeting someone who professionally works in the area of Ancient Egypt was definitely a great experience that not everybody gets to observe. I learnt many amazing things such as mummies can have dried fruits in their tombs - Tutankhamun’s did and they were maintained for many decades. It was also superb to see how they could see the figure of the little boy ‘Curly’ from the CT scanner. I enjoyed the visit from Dr Davey very much and it was an experience I will never forget.

When we first met Dr. Davey, we were shown an array of artifacts. These sculptures were amazing to look at and looked very detailed. Later we got to learn what each of them were. One of the coolest things we got to see was a CT scan of a mummy. We learnt later that this mummy was a little boy and that a CT scan proved this. I am so happy we got to meet Dr. Davey and learnt about all the artifacts!
