Sports Update

SCSA Swimming

On Monday 13th May, SCSA (Secondary Catholic Sports Association) 7 girls who represented the

association in the VSAC swimming competition held at MSAC, with two of these girls from PCW! Teena Getulio & Ava McQueen competing in a range events across the evening coming up against the best swimmers in Victoria from all the other school associations.

Considering the SCSA only had a small contingent as this was organised at the last minute, our girls did very well. I have already been in contact with the Executive Officer of SCSA regarding next year as this is a great opportunity and a great pathway for our best swimmers at PCW.

Well done to Teena and Ava on this fantastic achievement!

SCSA Athletics

The SCSA Athletics Carnival was held at Lakeside stadium on Friday 17th May. Melbourne turned on the weather for the event, as it was a sunny 20 degrees after a brisk morning. The PCW girls in attendance continued to heat up the track throughout the day with some great performances across the day. Although being quite outnumbered by the other schools, the PCW girls put in a sterling performance across a number of events.

Outstanding Performances:

  • Vitalia Mitchell put in a great effort for the juniors on the track, winning a number of races
  • Emelia Downes did the Year 10 cohort proud as she filled gaps in events left right and centre across the duration of the day
  • Isabella Harper was the hero of the day as she broke (smashed) 2 records in both Triple jump (11.76m) and Long jump (5.40m)
  • Ayuen Akot ran like the wind to win a number of individual races, whilst also being a part of both the winning Senior 4 x 100m relay and Final Relay teams

The day was topped off by PCW winning the Final Relay! The event required each runner to run a certain distance (1st – 100m, 2nd – 100m, 3rd – 200m, 4th – 400m) and the PCW girls came home with aplomb to take the win. Well done to Vitalia Mitchell, Ella Hickey, Isabella Harper and Ayuen Akot. What do they say about being only as good as your last race?

Thank you to all girls who filled in for events they were not originally in. Your adaptability on the day was very impressive!

A final thank you to Marli, Belinda, Sheryl, Sasha, Rachael Maddox, and a number of student helpers for their help on the day!

SCSA Basketball

Tuesday 28th May saw the PCW Basketball teams travel to MSAC to compete in the SCSA Division 2 Competition. Two junior teams, an Intermediate team and a Senior team were entered by PCW on the day.

The Juniors coached by Loredana Galli, and two of our interns from Singapore (Sasha and Belinda) showed a great combination of effort, teamwork and skill across the day, with the main highlight being a run to the Grand Final for the team coached by Sasha and Belinda. Although the girls lost the Grand Final, their effort on the day of playing 7 games and winning 5 of them was something to be very proud of!

The Intermediate team, coached by Fleur White didn’t quite have luck on their side throughout the day. Although they were able to reach the finals, the girls lost a number of very tight games by only 1 or 2 points. The back to back schedule and the nail biting finishes ended up catching up with the girls as they went down in the Semi Final.

The Senior team, coached by former student Marli Kernich-Drew took the competition by storm during their 5 group games. Comfortably playing the best basketball on show for the day, the girls were destined to take home the trophy. Besides holding a 12 point lead in the Semi Final, the girls couldn’t quite hang on and lost out in overtime. Although a disappointing finish to the day, the girls can hold their heads high for the spirit skill shown throughout the day.
