Team Multi-Age Writing

The Multi-Age teachers have been thoroughly impressed with the writing being completed during remote/flexible learning. We hope you enjoy reading some of their fantastic efforts.

Girl Courage- Alberta (Year 2)

The ship would be her protector for the night. The ship can give her the things she most needed right now: food, water, shelter and courage. She kept going. The ship came closer and closer. She managed to get inside and find a safe spot, away from the tide. She found a wooden box hidden under the Captain's desk. She tried to open it but needed to find a key. She could see a green shimmer coming out of the box. She looked and looked for the key. She remembered her mother's story about the green crystal. She heard her voice: "The key is in your hands". She touched the wooden box again, placing both hands to the side and twisted. And there it was, the green crystal, shining as if happy to see her. She holds the crystal in her hands, near her heart, and thinks about all her family and friends, her home, the green grass, the happy times. Tired she lay on the bed and fell asleep.

In the morning she woke up with the family next to her and she was now back to the place where she was most happy in her life. The crystal was a pendant around her neck now. She looked around and the ship was not there anymore. She was in her house by the sea. She went outside to see her village and all her friends healthy and happy as before the mist and the war. The green crystal protected the village and she lived happily ever after.

Caught You! Luther, (Year 2)

My Dad and I were shopping to get some stuff from Coles. While I was getting some food for my cat, I walked past a lady with her handbag sitting in her trolley.

As I was watching, she left the trolley on its own while she went to get a large bag of dog food. My dad saw her and he said “Hey do you need a hand?” She nodded and they both went to get the dog food from the shelf.

That’s when I saw him! A thief crept by and took the handbag from her cart. He kept walking pushing the bag under his jumper to hide it.

I told the lady what happened while she was gone, and her bag was stolen. “But that got all my money in it!” She cried.

I said “We might catch him if we are quick, come on dad” and we raced to the front of the store. Near the checkouts I pointed out the thief to the Coles employees. She called security and they stopped the man from leaving.

“We got him,” they said and gave the lady her bag back.

The man with hypnosis and magnetic powers! Ethan, (Year 2)

He practiced on fields with metal chairs, all day and night, but he never ever got tired. He always looked high and mighty but was actually very soft.

Now one day a boy was wandering in the forest near the field because his mother sent him to gather berries. One of the chairs nearly hit him.

But really it hit a tree filled with what looked like berries.

As soon as he saw the child he teleported him home and went back to practice!

Misty! Tavi, (Year 2)

The ship came closer and closer to the girl then suddenly her lantern fell and drifted off into the grey fog. The waves were high and she could no longer see the ship. It was pitch black in the dead of night. She shivered as the waves splashed over her while she was struggling to find help and comfort. Suddenly she heard a splash near the surface of the black water. Fins started surrounding her.

She had run away from her homeland because mean people had taken over her land and had made people on the island be their slaves. So she ran away. The sharks were coming closer until she got lifted by something strange and blue. It was a giant blue whale. The girl was scared but for some strange reason, the whale blinked at her, as stunned as she was she blinked back. Soon the whale had swum away and soon the sharks got bored so they swam off too, the whale and the girl went further into the grey mist.

She felt safe and calm and the mist was guiding them to their next adventure together.

Untitled- Spencer (Year 5)

As she walked forward she said to herself could it be him? It was too hard to see through the foggy night. She heard a creak then a crack, it continued along the boat beside her. The water bashed her into the side of the boat. Someone said what’s that and looked over the side of the boat he seemed to be covered in black berry juice. She was seeing things. Something fell down into the water from the man above. She stared at it. It was a black slime it bobbed up and down and up and down. Then it bobbed so hard that it smacked her in the face like it was alive. ‘Eww,’ she said and went on quietly. By then it had been an hour. She was cold and she couldn’t feel her legs. She climbed upon a small boat and passed out.

She woke up in the hospital with her mum. Her mum said you’ve been asleep for almost a week!

Some sailors found you in a life raft. They called the phone number on your dress and I came to the harbour as fast as sonic. If it wasn't for those sailors you could have died. She had yet to find her father and yet to find herself.

The Shoe - Sean (Year 4)

One morning I woke up in my room to see a peculiar looking pair of shoes. They were bright purple and had a label that read 'Time Travel Shoes' and found instructions inside the shoe. "If you see the lights start to blink green, it means time travel into the future will begin. Time is limited. When the lights start to blink red at first it blinks slow, you still have time so make it count. When it starts to blink fast, it means time travel back to the time you live in. Use it wisely." I put them on, the green lights came on and into the future I went.Travelling through time, in what seemed like seconds, I was no longer in my room, I was in some sort of reddish rock landscape. It seemed to be snowing. I placed my palm out and saw that the ice crystals were cubes. Seeing domes in front of me that looked like igloos, I ran into one of them, and spotted plants like rye, lettuce, carrots and peas planted inside.

A lady who was watering the plants, stopped when she saw me enter. "Can I help you?" she asked, with a smile. "My name is Zoe and I am the botanist here." With so many questions in my mind, I didn't know where to start. The first was of course, "What is the year and what location is this, please." She looked at me incredulously and decided to humour me anyway. "Okay, it's the year 2100 and this is the red planet." "80 years into the future?!"

Under the sea - Coco (Year 4)

It was a Thursday morning and Jessie woke up to a boat honking, she loved living by the sea side, but it was so noisy in the mornings! Then, Jessie remembered today was the day she went on a submarine trip! She quickly got up, dressed and grabbed her duffle bag. She walked over to the dock and instantly noticed the bright orange and white clown fish disguised as a submarine.

"Good morning Jessie." Said the captain, Jack

"Good morning Jack!" Jessie responded.

"Ready?" Jack asked Jessie when we were aboard.

"Ready when you are!" She was in an excited tone.

Two days later, disaster struck...

"We're sinking!!!" Jack yelled, waking up Jessie by frantically shaking her.

"What?!" Jessie yelled back.

The rain was pouring down - Hattie (Year 6)

The rain was pouring down, and cars splashed water onto unsuspecting people. Trees swayed in the heavy winds, creaking and moaning in pain. People ran about with yellow ponchos and big umbrellas, hopping into cabs and driving off. The sounds of the man made jungles mixed with the sounds of nature, of beauty. I was reminded, as I walked through the pouring rain, of how cruel humans can be. Slaughtering animals and murdering nature.

I was soaked to the bone, what with no coverage from the rain. A car zipped up next to me and splashed the murky street water in my face. I cried out, but people just kept walking, minding their own business. It wasn’t like I wasn’t used to it. No one cared in New York. No one. Especially not for me.

Team 1PYKB Mathematicians at Home

In Year 1, we are exploring the question:

How do Mathematicians Play?

We’ve played with shapes, built our own clocks (from Matisse’s tutorial), and created treasure maps.

As Jo Boaler reminds us, there is no such thing as a “maths person” and everyone can learn maths!

It’s been wonderful to see our families thinking flexibly and using materials they have at home to help them solve maths problems.

Morning Team Chats – Directed Drawings Tuesday, Comedy Show Wednesday, and Trivia Friday had us laughing out loud all morning long!

Alessi – capturing her learning on video has shown her positive mindset and how much she enjoys learning
Josie – persisting through the writing process to create wonderful stories

STEM fun at home

The best part about S.T.E.M. is that you don’t just need technology, you can use lots of things around the house.

Here’s some tips for making marble runs at home. Marble runs have E for engineering, S for science with gravity, plus M for maths using angles and speed. Art too if you decorate it!

Marble runs are a track that you can make out of anything: LEGO (especially the smooth bits and the roof pieces), boxes, paper, Hot Wheels track, toilet rolls and any other house stuff attached with some tape. If you don’t have a marble you can use a tennis ball, a ping pong ball, or any other ball you might have, anything that rolls.

They work by gravity which forces the ball to roll down the track.

Make sure you have an adult approved location and equipment, then start building.

Pick a starting spot then start building down to the spot that you have chosen to end the marble run. This will become your track.

Start putting your boxes/LEGO/ rolls in a track and attach with tape if you need.

Now place a marble on the track and let it go.

Try timing it to see if you can change it up for it to be faster or slower.

You can try making the highest or the longest.

I made one the other day and added a LEGO motor to a chain so the balls went back to the top and I made one from cereal boxes and cardboard tubes.

There you have it - a marble run for fun and S.T.E.M.
