HUB HAPPENINGS

Year 7 Kickstart High School with Boot Camp

What a sensational start to high school. Year 7 arrived promptly on their first day, looking fabulous in their new uniform and eager to meet their new classmates and teachers. For the first four weeks of school, they learnt how we ‘learn’ at Kurri Kurri High School in their new dynamic hub classroom. This focused on familiarising themselves with all the great platforms such as canvas, google drive and canva to name just a few of the tools that we use here at school. Students even identified their best strengths and qualities through the survey “Who’s who in the zoo”. Year 7 demonstrated excellence as we introduced some Focus on Writing strategies and key terms which will equip them for success for their high school journey. A student favourite is going to labs where they can practise their scientific skills investigating relevant questions.

They demonstrated grit when completing their first Mini Outcome “Who is the digital you?”. By combining all the skills they have learnt throughout Bootcamp they all completed exceptional Infographics which will be hung in the classrooms to remind them of what they truly can accomplish. A personal legacy for the year.

We all genuinely look forward to an exciting year of self discovery and learning with one another.

Year 7 Zoo Project Launch

Now that Year 7 have completed Boot Camp, it’s time to adapt and thrive in high school. In Week 6, Year 7 students attended an excursion to the Hunter Valley Zoo to launch their first project – How do you adapt to thrive? Students were able to experience many interactions including seeing the lions being fed, patting snakes, lizards and turtles, as well as feeding kangaroos, birds, goats and deer. Zoo staff spoke to the students about these animals and how they have adapted to help them survive in their environments, which is a key point in their first Mini Outcome for this project
