We are very excited to announce that St Joseph’s has recently signed up to the ResourceSmart Schools program. ResourceSmart Schools is a free, award winning Victorian Government program that supports schools to integrate sustainability across school facilities, curriculum and community.
Our school will be working in partnership with Jason Sheehan from CERES to work towards becoming a five star 'ResourceSmart’ school. Stars are obtained through a series of modules and specific requirements in the areas of Waste, Water, Energy and Biodiversity. Our focus this year will be working towards completing our Waste module and hopefully earning our first star!
The Sustainability Leaders, Mella and Zia, were lucky enough to work with Jason recently to conduct a ‘Waste Audit’ of our general waste and recycling bins and discuss some strategies to help reduce waste at our school. We look forward to implementing some of Jason’s suggestions such as green waste caddies for classrooms and a Green Cone Solar Composter.
Each class has elected a Green Team representative to assist Mella and Zia with our sustainability initiatives. Our Green Team members are:
Prep: Hanna
Juniors: Amroz and Xavier
Middles: Olivia and Sunny
Seniors: Julian and Saskia
We will also be continuing our collaboration with Jay from Edible Gardens to plant and maintain our school garden planter boxes. Jay recently visited our school to assist Mella, Zia and the Green Team members to plant lettuce and parsley seedlings.
It is a very exciting time for St Joey’s as we move towards becoming a ‘ResourceSmart School!’
