The Great Book Swap

“Reading opens doors – that is, doors to future opportunities and choices.”

This year Karoo is proudly participating in the 2023 Great Book Swap.  As a part of the event we have been assigned to a language house ; MARANYDJALK which translates as Stingray.

SO, WHAT IS THE GREAT BOOK SWAP we hear you ask!

The Great Book Swap is a fantastic way to celebrate reading locally, learn more about Indigenous Languages and culture, while raising funds for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation (ILF).

Schools, libraries, universities, book clubs and individuals can host a Great Book Swap.  The idea is to swap a favourite book in exchange for a gold coin donation.

This year the ILF are aiming to raise $180,000! In registering to host a Great Book Swap event Karoo will be actively helping to gift the target of 18,000 new, carefully chosen books to children in remote Communities across Australia.

WHAT TO DO NEXT?

Consider what book or books you would like to donate to this wonderful charity initiative then place them in the clearly signed hamper in the office foyer.

The book swap event will be held in the school Library on:

Tuesday 17th October, 8:45am – 3:45pm

Students will be invited to visit with their class during the day and bring along their gold coin donation to browse and select a book they would like to take home.

During the lifetime of ILF they have:

  • Gifted 752,866 books to over 400 communities
  • Published 109 books reflecting 31 Indigenous Languages
  • Run their Book Buzz program in 90 playgroups, providing board and picture books, many with First Language translations

#2MillionKidsReading

National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) is held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA).  Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read online simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country. Now in its 23nd successful year, it is a colourful, vibrant, fun event that aims to promote the value of reading and literacy, using an Australian children's book that explores age-appropriate themes, and addresses key learning areas of the National Curriculum for Foundation to Year 6.
