eSmart Week

National eSmart Week: May 22 - 28

Our two eSmart leaders Anya and Hermione have been hard at work preparing for eSmart Week - recording themselves reading a cyber safety story and organising the poster competition.

Any student from F-6 can enter either individually or as a group. If your child would like to create a poster, either about this year's theme Be your best self online or any other eSmart topic please encourage them to do so and bring it to school. They need to hand it in to Mrs Hall in the Digi Tech lab by Friday 26th May.

All students from  F-6 will have the opportunity to participate in a lesson during Digi Tech, that will encourage them to be smart, safe and responsible online. We hope that you take the opportunity to chat with your child/ren about what they learn.

The Foundation students will listen to a story called Digiduck's Famous Friend, read by one of our past eSmart leaders. The story tells the tale of Digiduck  and his friends and how they learn that you don't always know who you are talking to online. You can re-read the story with your child by clicking HERE

The Year 1 students will listen to a story called Digiduck and the Magic Castle read by our eSmart Leader Anya. You can re-read the story with your child by clicking HERE. The story is about a new game that everyone’s playing, and Digiduck wants to join in! With the help of his friends, he explores the magic castle, and they whizz through the levels after a lucky find makes it easier. Digiduck is in for a shock however, when he discovers that the spell ingredients are not the only things hidden in the game…

The aim of this story is to help start conversations between children and adults about many aspects of online gaming, such as:

  • the types of games that young children enjoy playing online and why
  • how to tell if real money can be spent
  • the social elements of gaming with others (e.g., keeping personal information safe)
  • what to do if someone is pressuring you to do something that you are unsure about

The Year 2 students will listen to a story called Digiduck’s Big Decision read by our other eSmart Leader Hermione. If you'd like to read the story again so you can discuss it with your child, click HERE.

The story tells the tale of Digiduck who is faced with a difficult decision. He is given the opportunity to see into the future to the consequences of posting something online.

With support, Digiduck is able to make the responsible decision!

The Year 3 students will participate in a lesson called The Power of Words. They learn that while they are enjoying their favourite websites and online games, they may have interactions from other people that can make them feel angry, hurt, sad or fearful.

Students explore ways to handle cyberbullying and how to respond in the face of upsetting language online.

The Year 4 students will participate in a lesson called "Be a Super Digital Citizen". They learn that whilst online tools are exciting and powerful, they also come with big responsibilities.

Students explore appropriate ways to take action and resolve conflicts. Empowering them to be ‘upstanders’ and help others in need.

The Year 5 students will investigate clickbait and how to avoid it in a lesson called "You Won't Believe This!".

The  Year 6 students will  look at the problem of "Fake News". Through this activity they will begin to develop the media literacy skills to help them evaluate the reliability of a news source. These skills can also be used to evaluate the reliability of websites in general.

There's even an event for parents hosted by the Alannah and Madeline Foundation - CLICK HERE to register - you will need to scroll quite a way down the page to get to the workshop section.
