Chess Victoria Competition

An amazing performance by our chess teams in yesterday’s tournament at Scotch College. This is the first year that our school is competing in the much tougher Chess Victoria competition that includes teams such as Brighton Grammar, Melbourne Grammar, St. Michaels, Waverley Christian College, Scotch College, Balwyn High, MacRob, Mentone Grammar, McKinnon, Ivanhoe, PLC, Camberwell Grammar, etc.

By the end of the first two rounds we were in second place, one point the leaders. We took the lead in the fifth round and didn’t surrender it until the very tense, nail-biting end of round 7… Winners! It was so exciting.

We went there hoping to finish in the top 5 and thereby qualify for State Finals, so to finish the day in first place in a far superior competition to what we have been used to recently, was really something special.

A total of 23 teams competed and our second team finished in a very creditable tie for 9th position. Our second team also had one girl (Mackenzie L – Year 8) who had not played for our school before. She finished with 4/7 points; the top girl in the tournament finished with a score of 5/7.

Team Results:

Huntingtower                     28 points

Balwyn                                  26

Waverley Christian Col    25.5

Scotch                                   25

A genuine team effort.

Mr Rodney Jones
Chess Coach

Lexie N (Year 7)

Well done to Lexie who was selected to represent Australia in the Under 14s New Zealand Easter Classic which was a significant achievement as she was one of only 5 Victorians selected for the softball national team.

From April 5th to April 9th, she competed in Auckland against strong NZ teams. She played a pivotal role in her team as catcher and achieved an on base average of 885 (which is considered elite). Her team made it to the Grand final and in a nail-biting finish, they won the Gold Medal. Congratulations Lexie!

Ethan B (Year 3)

Congratulations to Ethan in Year 3 who has been selected from amongst hundreds of soccer players from Australia based on his ability and attitude to represent Barça Academy Australia at the Barça Academy Cup Asia Pacific 2023, which will be held in Japan, in September. We wish Ethan all the best and look forward to hearing about his experiences when he returns.

Daniel L (Year 11) and Tharul P (Year 10)

Well done to both Daniel and Tharul who have been chosen to represent Huntingtower on the Matt Fregon MP (Member for Ashwood) Youth Advisory Committee. As part of this Youth Committee, they will be involved in Ashwood district decision making and contribute to council issues. As well as advocating for change on issues important to young people. A brilliant opportunity, well done to both students!
