Stage 1 News

Stage 1 has been extremely busy and have had a wonderful start to the term so far!

We have been lucky to have had Kailee McDonald working with the students in the Magpie classroom. She is just about to finish her second practical and has really enjoyed teaching all the students.

Below is a quick word from Mrs McDonald:

Hi, my name is Kailee McDonald, and I’m a prac student through UNE. I am from Wyoming, USA and I have lived in Australia for 15 years. I have two kids age 8 and 5. My favourite subject is English - I love reading and teaching writing!  In maths, the Magpies have been learning all about data.  We have learned how collect, categorise and display information. I have loved teaching and learning with the Magpies. Thank you to Emma McCathie and the wonderful students for including me in your classroom.

Stage One has been working so hard in the first 5 weeks of Term 2!!!!!

In Geography, Stage One have started a new unit called ‘Australia’s Location’. They have used Atlases, maps and Google Earth to locate the Northern and Southern Hemisphere, Equator and oceans.  In groups they were asked to visit every continent and sail over every ocean on a world cruise.  All students have started to plan their trip.  Cannot wait to see all their adventures.

In Maths we have been learning how data can be visually displayed and read. This week Magpies read the big book ‘Clowning Around’. They were given different clown hats to sort into categories.  After, they sorted their data as a picture graph.  It was amazing to see how they all sorted their information in different ways.

In English we have studied the picture book ‘March of the Ants’ by Ursula Dubosarsky. We looked at important words from the story (such as expedition, destination, determined, dismayed) and retold the story using words from the vocab list. The Magpie class created some great artworks out of natural and recycled materials.
