SAKG NEWS

Over the past fortnight kitchen and garden classes have served as well-earned break from all the testing that occurs during assessment weeks. In the kitchen students continue to enjoy cooking with rhubarb, which will be a staple mixed with other fruits as the weather continues to be wintery. Students are making a chickpea and lettuce salad to use up the lettuce in our garden before it gets much colder. They are also using pumpkins and potatoes in our soup and continue making fresh bread. And as our chickens are continuing to lay eggs through the cold days, students keep making fritatta with eggs and silver beet and other greens that our garden yields, as long as they keep coming!

With Jodie being on leave for the fortnight garden classes have been optional and run by the classroom teachers.  Those participating have been caring for the animals in terms of feeding, cleaning cages and nesting boxes, ensuring they have fresh water and collecting any eggs. They have been helpful in clearing the paths, particularly of weeds and leaves. And lastly, they have been given the chance to let their artistic talents shine through by creating colourful patterned paper using potato stamps of which they have made themselves or autumn leaves.

This week our key garden volunteers, Mickey and Rob, have had to finish up due to personal commitments and health reasons. We would like to say a huge thank you for all their time and effort over the past 6 months.  Without their assistance the garden would not be in the great shape that is, so THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!  So, on the flip side of this we are calling for any volunteers to help in the garden, whether it be with a class or simply to offer some time to assist with the never-ending list of jobs.  If you are interested, all you need is a current working with children’s check (WWCC) and to contact the office or any member of the SAKG team (Mrs O’Brien, Jodie or Kate).

And on a final note, please check our recipes that are attached.  Class favourites and great dishes given our current weather.  ENJOY!
