Visual Arts

Over the first few weeks of term the Year 3 & 4 students have been focusing on “shape’ as an art element. Students were introduced to the artist Paul Klee a 20th century artist famous for using shape and colour to paint abstract landscapes.  The students have experimented with a mixture of media and techniques to create a work inspired by Klee’s work “Castle and the sun”.

The year 1 and 2 students have been learning about Henri Matisse and his use of organic shapes in his paper cut-out works. Like Matisse the students painted their own coloured paper samples and then cut them into interesting organic shapes to use in their collages.

Sport

Last Wednesday 22 students from years 3-6 were chosen to compete in the WESA Cross Country at Jells Park.  All the students showed resilience to complete the 2km (9/10 yr olds) and 3km (11-13 yr olds) races.  Many of the students finished in the top half, with a few successfully beating their finishing position from last year.  A special congratulation goes to Leela, Deniz and Tiasha who came 1st, 2nd and 12th in their respective races and earning them a chance to compete at Division.

On Wednesday Leela and Tiasha took part in the Division competition at Mirrabooka Reserve in Blackburn. They finished 39th and 46th respectively. We are very proud of their achievements!

French

  • PREP: The Prep students have started learning French numbers 1 to 10. They will learn the following song in class and will perform it at assembly at the end of Term.
  • GRADE 1: This week the students have practised four new words with the puppets:
  • GRADE 2: The students are starting a new topic: French cities. In small groups, they chose a city, read facts about it and made a presentation of their city in front of the class.

  • GRADES 3 and 4: We are continuing our enquiry topic, famous French prehistoric sites. The students were assessed on a list of vocabulary. They also found out how the famous Lascaux caves were discovered by four teenage boys - what an amazing story! (watch video)
  • GRADES 5/6: The students prepared their portfolio tasks and did an amazing job. Most of them are now able to describe a person's face, including the eye colour, the hair colour/texture/length, the skin colour, if the person wears a beard/moustache/fringe, hair clip, tie, jumper, earrings, etc.  It was a lot of work and it took several weeks to prepare for this task but I am very proud of their achievement. Well done everyone!   Here are the works of Liam, Leo and Kayla.

STEAM

Prep, Grade 1 and Grade 2: The students have continued on their coding journey by completing activities that increase in complexity as they work through them. They have used their knowledge to get Scrat to his acorn and other activities. During rotations, the students work on their programming skills  with the Blue-Bots.

Grade 3 and 4: The grade 3s and 4s have now swapped in their groups. The groups that worked with the Vex Go robotics have moved to coding, and the groups that were coding have moved to the Vex Go kits. This means that the students new to the Vex Go robotics kits have explored making the tallest flagpole and making a Mars buggy. It is really great to see the children using their critical thinking skills and working together to solve problems. Well done!

Grade 5/6A have continued their light investigation and this week made a periscope so they could see around a corner. Last week they looked at how different materials affect the path of light. We discussed the words transparent, translucent and opaque.
