Mrs Emily Sullivan

Dear Parents,

The above article outlines a great example of teaching new vocabulary to your child through reading aloud. Developing a wide, rich vocabulary can lead to greater outcomes in students' own reading and writing and helps them expand their knowledge of the world. The article refers to children in Kindergarten and Year 1, however, I believe that reading aloud is beneficial to children of all ages as fluency, expression and attention to punctuation is modelled for them. Reading aloud also opens up opportunities to have conversations about the vocabulary, themes, ideas or information and allows children to ask questions and make connections.  If it's been a while, may I encourage you to read aloud to your child, whatever their age. It is so beneficial for their language and literacy development, and also a great way to spend time together.

Kind regards,

Emily Sullivan
