Stage 1

A message from Stage 1

All stage 1 classes have now been to Thalgarrah, where we continued our learning about living things and how they grow. We investigated the contents of the compost bin (yuck, but so interesting!), went to the river to catch creatures in dip nets and studied mini beasts and insects under microscopes. We finished off the day by having a close encounter with a bearded dragon and a python.

It is great to see home readers being returned each week for teachers to change, ready for the following week. We are encouraging independence by reminding students that it is their responsibility to pack their reader folder in their bag, and to check and make sure the reader and reading log is safely in the folder.

English

We are learning to:

  • write an information report about an animal
  • group information into paragraphs

We know we are successful when we can:

  • use topic specific vocabulary
  • use simple punctuation correctly
  • begin a paragraph with a topic sentence, followed by sentences with related ideas

Mathematics

We are learning to:

  • create number bonds to 20
  • use inverse operations in addition and subtraction
  • use doubles or near doubles to add numbers
  • use a number line for addition and subtraction

We know we are successful when we:

  • recall number facts that add to 20
  • can double numbers efficiently as an addition strategy
  • can recognise when numbers are close to doubles facts
  • understand the opposite to addition is subtraction
  • can add or subtract numbers using a number line

Physical Education

This term the students are learning the elements of dance (such as time, space, tempo and levels) to explore movement in response to a stimuli. Students will develop an understanding of safe dance practice to ensure the safety of themselves and others.
