Highton Bowls Club Schools Triples Competition

What an amazing opportunity for Western Heights College students to be involved in the inaugural Highton Bowls Club Schools Triples Competition. A significant number of students expressed interest in this fantastic opportunity with 24 students being selected for the WHC team. All students keenly contested their 6 pool games before the semi-finals. The best WHC placed pool one teams were Marson 3rd & Earl 4th whilst in pool two Jamishidi 3rd & Spoors 4th. The eventual winners were from Geelong High School. All students acknowledge that their bowling skills progressively improved throughout the day, particularly when having a bye as they were individually coached by Paul from Bowls Victoria. All students were most appreciative of the help provided by the Highton Bowls Club members who assisted on the day as well as the excellent BBQ lunch provided by the club. Many of the students now look forward to entering and participating in the SSV Western Region Lawn Bowls Competition early in 2020. A special mention to the Year 12 boys team of Holden Earl, James Steven & Regan Meldrum who were keen to represent the WHC sporting program for the final time, a day after their final VCE exam. Well done to all those students who decided to give a lawn bowls competition a try.

Senior VCAL - Spare Meals Geelong

"During Year 12 VCAL Transition our class helped give back to the community through an organisation called Spare Meals Geelong, who collect donated food items. People who are struggling to feed themselves or their family can come and collect some frozen meals for free. To prepare for our project we each had to find a recipe, either sweet or savory. Last Thursday we walked to Woolworths Supermarket and had a $15 budget to buy all the ingredients for our meals. On Friday we cooked our meals and packaged them to be sent straight off to Spare Meals. As a class we had a variety of different meals like truffles, spaghetti bolognese, chilli con carne, parmis, gingerbread, honey joys, sausage rolls and many more! We really enjoyed giving back to the community." By Sophie Trezise Senior VCAL 2020.

Year 7 Mission Possible – Deakin University

On Thursday 14th November, Year 7 students attended Deakin University for the day. The goal of the “Mission” is to get young students familiar with our local university and to feel connected with it as a potential post-secondary option for further study. Students completed various activities including a race around the campus to collect answers to questions, sessions in either engineering or nursing and an opportunity to ask questions of current Deakin students. Our Western Heights students were fantastic in their participation and enthusiasm.

Children’s Picture Story Book

As part of Year 8 Literacy this term, our students undertook a shared learning experience with our good friends in Grade 1&2 at Hamlyn Banks Primary School.

Each of our students was partnered with a primary school buddy for the purpose of writing, illustrating and producing a book for them.

We were all very excited to meet our buddy earlier in the term!  To help us produce a book which would appeal to our buddy, we interviewed them to create a profile which was all about them; their likes, dislikes, hobbies, personalities etc.  We also listened to our buddies read so that we knew what reading level to target our writing to.

Back at the College, we spent weeks planning and then writing and drawing a story that our buddy would love and that included things they told us they liked

Last week, our buddies walked down to our Learning Community and we presented them with their books.  They were so excited and we were all very proud that we had made them so happy.

We had morning tea with our buddies, read our books and had a lot of fun!

The Geelong Museum of Motor

The Geelong Museum of Motor (in the Blue Building of WHC) and WHC are joining forces to help restore a FORD ANGLIA similar to the one in Harry Potter.  This program will bring the experienced car restorers and enthusiast at the museum and students interested in car restoration and hands on work together to restore the car which was donated to the museum earlier this year.

2020 Yr8 students in STEM transition

Our 2020 Yr8 students in STEM transition had a great time with the Science Delivery Program, developed by the University of Melbourne on Wednesday 5th of December.

The program was facilitated by current Bachelor of Science students at the University of Melbourne, who have been trained as volunteer science presenters to deliver the program. They have developed interactive science activities to engage our students with science in exciting ways. Students experienced a Science Show: Highly visual and exciting scientific demonstrations including the Rubens tube and flammable Hydrogen balloons. Presenters shared their university experiences and answered student questions. Workshops: Interactive group activities, which included a CSI forensics activity and optical illusions.

Duke of Edinburgh

Throughout this semester year 9 and 10 students who have been a part of the Duke of Edinburgh subject have been on a number of experiences such as mountain biking, representing our school in the Barwon Respect Cup and 2 expeditions that involved camping overnight, canoeing and being self-reliant having to carry and prepare everything themselves.

Our students were terrific in their attitude towards completing each expedition, their teamwork and support of one another and their achievements. Well done to all of our Duke of Ed students on a very successful semester!

END OF YEAR ACTIVITIES SCHOOL BIKE TOUR

To finish of the 2019 school year a group of cycling enthusiastic students and staff participated in the inaugural End of Tear Activities School Bike Tour. Any students interested in cycling and challenging themselves physically were invited to get their bike ready for the day. After an initial bike safety check and group safety riding procedures which were completed at school, the group then headed off towards Leopold via Fyansford, the Barwon River Trail and Bellarine Rail Trail. Despite a flat tyre and damaged gear derailleur whilst keeping an eye out for slithering snakes all students performed extremely well under the warming conditions. The wise decision was made to abandon the Leopold plan and after a refreshing and refuelling lunch break at Newcomb the group then ventured off to tackle the return journey, which included cycling and walking up forever challenging Cementies Hill The group finally arrived back to school where our support vehicle driver Brendan greeted us with a refreshing icy-pole. The pains of the day were now fading away as the memories from the ride would last forever. Well done and safe cycling to all participants and a big thank you to the supporting staff:

Brendan Bolton, Stacey Marriage, Alvin Ang and Zane Mc Keon.

The student participants included: Adam Arsenijevic, Will Saunders, Rory Karnilowicz, Dylan Trajkovski, Brandon Waugh, Tyler Whistance, Chloe Baldock and Matthew Fischer.
