Week 3 Home Learning

Home Learning

Once again, we would like to thank you all for your continuing support and positive communication this past week. We are continuing to adapt and adjust things to ensure the best possible education can be provided, in a very challenging situation.

WORK EXPECTATION:

Having spoken to the children this week, the majority have indicated the work load is achievable and they are enjoying their learning. The expectation is that most tasks will be completed in school books - with the date and LO (Learning Objective) written along the top of the page. If your child does not have their school book/s at home, any other workbook will be fine. We will also specify on the slides if work can be done in groups, otherwise tasks are to be completed individually.

GOOGLE MEET SESSIONS:

Information about your child's Google Meet sessions will be posted on their individual class Google Classrooms. We have adjusted the timetable to include extra sessions this week.

DAILY REFLECTIONS:

At the end of each day, we have asked the students to reflect on their work for that day. This will be through the Google Classroom and teachers will be using this information to help mark the school roll, to ensure all students are engaging with home learning tasks. If possible, please remind your child to complete this task.

English

Reading

This week, we are continuing to read Running Wild, by Michael Morpurgo and will be reading Chapter 4. Students can choose to keep notes as they read to help with task 3. Just like last week, the students will then need to complete a word study related to vocabulary from the chapter. Finally, the students will explore the descriptive language used to describe Oona, the elephant. This task will involve skimming and scanning Chapter 4 to find words or phrases the author has used to describe this character.

Writing

We will continue our unit about writing information reports. We will be focusing on research skills, especially how to search for accurate information and how to pull information from multiple sources to create your own information report. We will be looking not only at the content of information reports, but the structure as well. During Week 3, students will learn the structural and literary features of an information report, in preparation for writing their own in week 4. Students will then write a non-chronological information report based on The Life of Charles Dickens and their own research.

Mathematics

This week Grade 6 will be learning about area and perimeter. Each lesson includes a video, showing  the different measurement concepts. These concepts are then reinforced with engaging activities, which focus on practising the skills of both area and perimeter,  as well as problem solving tasks.

Access to additional mathematics work can be found through Mathletics and students can continue to work through their personal goals using My Numeracy.

Unit of Inquiry

Students will continue to improve their knowledge of action this week. Students will write examples of issues from around the world or community that can be addressed through taking action. They will Identify the message, theme and issues in the song, Where is the Love ft. World by the Black Eyed Peas. Students will be answering questions presented on the Unit of Inquiry slides about action, facts and participants related to specific topics. Students will be researching an action of their choice.

Contact

We encourage and celebrate student voice in Grade 6. If students have any concerns or questions, they can comment or post on either the whole cohort or individual class Google Classrooms. Teachers receive notifications when students post and will respond when possible. Students should also communicate questions and ideas relating to learning with each other using the two Google Classrooms. This will keep them connected and allow them to see each other's progress.

If you have any questions or concerns, please email your child’s teacher through compass.

Reminders

Children must have Google Classroom notifications turned on to ensure they are receiving communications from their classroom teacher and their peers. It would be useful if students checked the Google Classroom each day to see if new information or tasks have been added.

Specialist Team

The Specialist team will be organising tasks for the students through their iNewsletter which can be accessed from here or the link the Specialists will send out each week. Please contact Mrs Travis or Mrs Goosey if you have any questions.

Hearing Unit

Parents of Hearing Unit students, please continue to refer to your child’s weekly HU program. Please contact your child’s Teacher of the Deaf with any queries.
