Commonwealth Games celebration at MGSC

To celebrate the significant event of the Commonwealth games currently occurring in Birmingham we organised a Commonwealth games themed week at school. With a 3v3 basketball round robin occurring at the start of the week and the winners of each division playing off in the final at the end of the week, students from all year levels celebrated the end of the week with a Commonwealth games themed free dress day.

We were able to raise money for Fair Game Australia (an organisation who distributes sports equipment to under privileged communities in Australia) with help from the SRC on the day collecting money and handing out raffle tickets.

The raffle was drawn at before the year 12 students versus teachers dodgeball game. We had a fantastic turn out on the day and were able to give out an array of prizes.

State Finals

Once again we congratulate our Junior and Senior AFL and Senior Netball team members on their achievements and efforts in reaching State finals.

Junior Australian Rules

On the Monday 8 August a group of year 7s and 8s competed in the State football competition after winning the regional competition. The first game at States we pulled through with a win which lead us to the semi final, however despite the hard work the girls put into the game we didn't win, but a great effort from all and a awesome day overall.

Senior Australian Rules

Our Senior Australian Rules football team went out on Wednesday 10 August to compete in their State Quarter and Semi Final. With a win in the Quarter final, they then progressed to the Semi Final but lost that game unfortunately.

All the best to our Senior Netball team members who will be playing on Monday 5 September at their State round robin.

Year 8 Netball

I was lucky enough to coach the year 8 netball squad. It was a jam packed day as both our B team and A team were competing. The teams had tough competition with the A team not making it through to the finals. However the B team put up a fight drawing in the finals which were unfortunately cut short at 3rd quarter due to rain! The day was overall so much fun and it has been such a enjoyable experience coaching the year 8’s!

Year 7 Netball

All girls were well behaved, listened, were good sports and overall played really well. They all stood out and every player brought something to the team especially Parker. I thought she did great in a range of positions. Lelia was great in defense, as were Grace and Brooke who showed skills we worked on in drills. I thought Alice was the most improved, especially when being put into a position she doesn't play she managed to do a great job. Jada and Amalia worked well in goals and communicated to one another, along with Charlotte and Amalia. When playing a team who had little experience I noticed Amalia helping out someone who was a little confused which I thought was great sportsmanship from her. Overall the girls played and behaved really well and managed to beat all teams by a high score difference and managed to improve and grow by working as a team together.

Olympic Change Maker award

Congratulations to our two students who have been nominated for the Olympic Change Maker award. Amberley P (year 12) and Jemmah P (year 11) have been recognised for their contribution to our Interschool sport program as both a competitor and coach as well as their involvement outside of MGSC in their sporting fields. Both of these students have shown pride and commitment in their involvement as MGSC student coaches during their schooling.

As part of their nomination, students are encouraged to submit a 1-minute video in order To be considered for the National Summit, which actively demonstrates how they:

Display leadership through sport in your school or local community, and/or
Use sport as a vehicle to improve health & wellbeing and drive social change in your school or local community.
