Year 3

The year 3 team love to spill the tea on what's going on in our cohort, read below to find out the juicy information of what our glorious students are doing at school.

Maths:

This Term in Maths students have been looking at fractions for Number and Algebra and Angles, 2D and 3D shape for Measurement and Geometry. Students will be looking at transformation and maps for the remainder of term.

In Fractions we have been looking at placing fractions on a number line, looking at fractions of a shape and a collection. The students have just started to work on looking at improper fractions and changing them to mixed numbers and then placing those on number lines.

All about angles! Students have been investigating about how angles are a measure of turn as well as recognising how angles are all around us in the classroom. Their confidence in knowledge of angles has grown so much that we have now started looking into different types of angles: Right, Straight, Acute and Obtuse! Check out some of our amazing angles posters below – Can you spot any angles in your home?

Writing and Reading:

The Year 3 students have been enjoying learning all about functional writing. They have been working hard to explore the various types of functional writing that is used within a party planning process. Some of the types we have looked at are: recipes, invitations, emails, lists and menus, with many more to come as we progress through the unit. Have a look at some of the invitations our Year 3s have created!

Science:

During Science, students have been focusing on understanding of Physical Science- Heating up.

Students have been developing the skills to distinguish between temperature and heat and use examples to illustrate how heat is produced and transferred. Throughout the unit, students have been using formal and informal scientific language to communicate their observations, methods and findings.

Some inquiry questions posed were:

  • If I hold something cold in my hands, why does it warm up?
  • Where does the heat come from? And when I turn on the heater, where does the heat actually come from?
  • How heat is produced, which objects make their own heat, and how heat is transferred?

Humanities:

During Humanities, students have been learning about the concept of social justice issues experienced by people with disabilities.  The unit students enjoyed watching the movie ‘Wonder’ and explored and identified the themes and lessons that were learnt.  After the movie students completed a movie review and explored the meanings and understandings of the following movie quotes

  • “When given the choice between being right or being kind choose kind.”
  • “I think there should be a rule that everyone in the world should get a standing ovation at least once in their lives.”
  • “Kinder than is necessary. Because it's not enough to be kind. One should be kinder than needed.”
  • “It’s not enough to be friendly. You have to be a friend.”
We are proud of all our students' efforts, positive mindsets and look forward to acknowledging and celebrating their accomplishments with them throughout these units.

Year 4

As another term comes towards the end, the grade 4’s are all looking forward to a well earned break. The students have all worked extremely hard to create some exciting and creative pieces throughout the term. Students experienced an underwater adventure with an excursion to the Melbourne Aquarium. We were taken on a guided tour where we learned about the different aquatic animals and the environments that they all live in. It was an amazing experience.

The year 4’s experienced an exciting Book Week. Students came dressed up as some of their favourite characters from all kinds of books. It was great to see so many students dressed up for the school book parade. Students also were able to experience a Story Quest incursion looking at the different books nominated for awards this year. The students were engaged by the enthusiastic performance given at the incursion.

In Maths, students have been introduced to decimals after our fraction units. We have been learning about the connection between decimals and fractions as well as learning about place values after the decimal place. Students have also started adding and subtracting decimals using strategies we learned earlier this year.

Year 5

Reading

Students in Year 5 have begun working on a new area of learning, with a focus on biographies. They have been reading about people who have had a positive influence on the world and have used their voice for good. They have been making connections between biographies and our PBL topic of Social Justice.

Writing

Biographies are also a focus in writing, with students choosing an influential person to research and write about. They have been looking at the important features of a biography and will include these in their own text. We look forward to seeing the different ways that students publish their work.

Maths

Our new topic of Shape and Location has been fun and creative, as students build composite shapes and nets. Students have investigated shapes that tesselate as well as different ways to transform shapes through flips, slides and turns.

Year 6

Over the last two weeks the Year 6 students have competed against other schools in their chosen sports during inter-school sports. Our sports varied from softball, tennis, volleyball, basketball and cricket. Thank you Ms Moed, Ms Sibel, Mrs Annison, Mrs Bowker and Ms Whelan, for coaching and helping us. We had lots of fun playing sport and cheering on our friends.

In the classroom we’ve been learning measurement in Maths. We covered topics including length, area, volume, capacity and mass. We have just started learning about time.  Did you know that in St.Vitus cathedral in Prague there is a clock with only one hand? You can tell the time using just the hour hand, but the minute hand gives greater accuracy. The clock face also has Roman numerals on it, where symbols like X mean 10.

In reading and writing we have finished our author study on Morris Gleitzman and yes – we were able to get our books signed. Now we are working on biographies, books about interesting people like Nancy Wake and Hans and Margret Reys. Some of the people we have chosen to write biographies about include Dylan Alcott, Morris Gleitzman, Steve Irwin and Marie Curie!

Here are some parts of our biographies that we have been working on.
