Prep - Mrs McLean & Mrs Stephan
The prep teaching cohort have been reflecting on the year so far, it has been incredible to watch each and every students’ learning journey. We have seen these little people blossom into hard working GGSS students that will soon be moving on to grade one! Where has the time gone?
It’s definitely been a busy year with lots of ‘new and exciting things to learn. It’s very rewarding as a teacher to see their little faces light up when they’ve achieved a goal, whether it be academic or behavioural. As we move into the last term of the year, we think its important to reflect on where they were, where they are and where they’re going as learners.
Some of our favourite memories captured!
1/2 - Mrs Allison, Mrs Anderson and Mrs Cooper
Year 1/2 classes have begun working with the URStrong program. We have been learning about being our own best friend and getting to know our own likes, dislikes and personal qualities. We have also started to learn about what makes a good friend and how to be one. We are really enjoying Friendology 101!
3/4 - Mrs Bridge, Mrs Couch, Mrs Stafford and Mrs Muirhead
On August 22nd, 48 keen and eager Year 3/4 students set off on a two-day ‘traineeship’ at Currumbin Valley Community Farm School to learn how to become ‘bush chefs’. Students learned about sustainability and how to live today in order to preserve our world for tomorrow. Activities included planting native trees, making bee hotels, creating and planting vegetable gardens, and rock-hopping around the cascades. On our last day, the students cooked up some mouth-watering biscuits and muffins using their native plant. We all had an incredible time and were impressed with the behaviour and respect students showed towards teachers and each other whilst on camp.
5/6 - Mrs Cubis, Miss Nees and Ms Cumerford
What a fabulous experience 5/6 camp was at Noosa North Shore Adventure Park.
Students climbed ropes, canoed, built rafts, body boarded, , played laser tag, night hiked and learnt about surf safety, however the biggest accomplishment for many was conquering their fears and having fun while doing it. Students worked together and developed teamwork skills, they communicated, and they cooperated to problem solve. They also helped serve yummy meals to their peers, wiped down tables and cleaned up after themselves. Check out our camp video (thanks Mr Stafford).
Staff that attended were incredibly proud of all the students and were blown away by the positive comments they received from camp staff.
Book Week
Our Book Week parade was a huge success this year! See the video of our parade on our youtube channel (linked below.) Students have engaged in a variety of Book Week activities for the week related to the theme of 'dreaming with eyes open.' Our week culminated with a door decorating competition, which was lots of fun!
Science Week
National Science Week is the annual celebration of all things science and technology. The theme for National Science Week Australia 2022 is ‘Glass: More than meets the eye’. Glass plays a huge part in all of our lives. This year’s event will put different types of glass under the metaphorical microscope, inspecting them in closer detail. That will include optical fibre, laboratory glassware, as well as phone screens. It’s set to be a cracking year that ties into the UN’s International Year of Glass. This year we will finish off our science week celebrations with a visit from street science. This incursion will happen on Friday the 9th of September.
Minecraft Cluster Challenge
For the first time Glenore Grove students from year 3/ 4 were invited to participate in a Cluster Minecraft Challenge, held at Laidley District State School. We left school at 8:20 for an 8:45 sign in. The day started with a small introduction and explanation of the day’s events.
The plan for the day was all around the design process: prepare, plan, collaborate, create and present. Our student team consisted of Cody Seinor, Abbey Grant, Sophie Pannett and Dante Bullock. The task for the day was to design a sustainable habitat for an imaginary animal, the LIZREN to survive, increase in numbers and live comfortably.
Our students work on their plan: making annotations, task setting, nominating jobs and creating the environment on paper. We decided to have a short brain break from all that planning.
Snacks and lunch out of the way and it was down to actual Minecraft construction. After an hour of VERY intense “minecrafting” – the LIZREN and her sustainable environment was done.
Cody set up his computer as the host for the sharing of the Minecraft world and Sophie presented all the zones and creatures created.
Our GGSS Team won 2 sets of certificates, ones for participation and a BIG one for the Best Collaboration for the day (we also won a Lego Minecraft bee farm for our library).
At assembly we handed out the official certificates and Lego prize.
A great, successful day was had by all – Mrs Couch and I came away SUPER proud not just because all our student were such great ambassadors for our school but they showed true team spirit.
