In the Classroom

National Science Week

Students were engaged in activities throughout the College each day last week for National Science Week. Senior School students took part in the activities including making honeycomb, bottle rockets, tempering chocolate, built catapults, made sugar glass and played with a virtual reality machine exploring the national space station and playing games.

Students were able to elect to come to any of these sessions that were run throughout lunch and recess. A special thanks to the Food Technology team, the Science team, the Core 1 team and Mr Topham for running activities during this time.

On Monday August 15 two student representatives and Head of Science, Daniel Robinson, attended a reception at government house, hosted by the governor Barbara Baker, to celebrate the commencement of National Science Week. With several scientists from universities, the CSIRO, the Royal Hobart Hospital and other industries, the student were able to speak with several experienced scientists about their research and careers. This was a tremendous opportunity and both students represented the college admirably.

In Prep, National Science Week was celebrated by doing a different experiment each day. Students investigating what happened when they placed white flowers in food coloured water and were amazed to see them change colour and see the pathway of the dye trace up through the petals.

Other notable experiment was creating an erupting volcano, (complete with dinosaurs!) in the sand pit. There were squeals of delight when the ‘lava’ bubbled out of the crater!

Mount Mawson

A quick day trip to Mount Mawson in the Mount Field National Park saw our Year 8s rug up to learn more about glaciation and changes in vegetation.

Sushi Making at Mount Carmel College

Our Japanese class was treated to an excursion and lesson in sushi making, alongside students at Mount Carmel College. Their attempt at this skillful craft proved challenging for some, but results were delicious as expected!
