Positive affirmation

Much can be said in society about the negative and what we are not happy with. The news is a good example of this representation. Two weeks ago, I was forwarded some information regarding some events taking place in town. Naturally, I went into the mindset of formulating how I would look to respond and resolve a negative scenario. After inviting our older students to come and speak with me, I was first downloaded with a tonne of information which took place. Then as I listened, I started to become aware of how our boys had responded in such a positive way to something which could have eventuated in quite the opposite. Our young men in this instance, stepped up and protected one of their own in such a mature manner. The intel I had received was in fact inaccurate and goes to show that we should not be quick to draw negative assumptions from the offset. Schools, by nature, are very busy places but as a collective we are mindful of never losing sight of those positive examples of what a true Virgilian means to our community.

The Special Ones

We all have people in our lives whom we look up to, admire and try to emulate. Those who are always there to support us when we need them. Those who provide us with wisdom and knowledge which seems beyond our years. They enact in us a sense of reflection in aiming to improve, develop and challenge the status quo. I think of those within our school community which either formally or informally provide staff, students and parents with this opportunity. This makes me think of a dear friend of mine who I refer to as the consigliere. A consigliere has the role of advising, never makes the decision for you, however counsels you in such a manner that you come to your own conclusions and decisions but have been educated in the process, seeing things in new lights and different ways than before. Whilst my dear friend is unwell at the moment, I am reflecting more and more on the impact he has had on me and how I intend to make him proud moving forward. Treasuring our chats about work, family, Carlton and who we want to be. I think that our boys need to be aware that there are people exactly like this for them here at school and they should never feel as though they do not have a someone to confide in. We pride ourselves on our pastoral care network work but this person who simply gets your son could also exist outside of this. We know relationship are integral to our success and our boys should know we are here for them.

Subject Selection Evening: Tuesday 30th of August

Next week we invite our current Year 8&9 students along with their families to our Subject Selection Evening. Our focus as we move towards the integration of Year 11&12 is pathways from 9-12. Students and parents will gain some clarification around the selection process at the College. More importantly, our Heads of Department and specific elective teachers will be available to talk through their courses and answer any questions you may have. Our subject handbook will be available early next week to support you through this process.

Our Library

With all of the building works that has been carried out the newly reformed library space is probably my favourite. Before school, recess, lunch and after school the library has become an extremely popular destination. From chess, card games, Jenga, quiet spaces to read and reflect, or those boys wishing to get a head start or catch up on class work, it has all been fantastic to see. The vibe has been exceptional with boys from all year levels utilising the space extremely well. I would like to commend the library staff in particular for all their efforts and for the boys who use this space in such a meaningful way.
